I live in a lighthouse on the Texas coast. Recently got interested in ELRS and took a sniper course at "777" Ranch west of Hondo from Paul Butler. He got me from MOA at 50 yds to MOA at 955 yards in just two days. Been shooting since 1941. My current big gun is a Savage 112 in .338 Lapua Mag with a 5.6-35x50 scope. And I am already looking for something bigger for the "King of Two Mile"

Always wanted to hunt a couple things on the triple 7-glad you had a good time there and became a better shot in the process. Living in a lighthouse is an interesting novelty-

Come on in the house, welcome to AH.

Jim - Welcome! Sounds like a lot fo us here could benefit from your experience. Can you tell me more about MOA at 50 yards compared to MOA at 955 yards?

Welcome aboard!

its the same angle...just have to have a gun that shoots consistently, a well designed bullet, and a steady hand. MOA is about the size of the deer kill zone at 1000 yards, 10". I am 84 so I am almost dead and my heart and lungs dont cause much disturbance.
What I learned from Paul was how to "read mirage". When you can read the wind for every point from start to finish, you can hit the target. Bullet drop is child's play. Reading Mirage is like ZEN......just relax and disconnect your conscious brain and let instinct take over. It sounds crazy, but it really works. Paul is a Marine sniper and he was in Afghanistan so he knows his business.
In all my other shooting I didnt worry too much about wind, but after 100 yards it comes into play.

Welcome to forum sir. Maybe you should post about your shooting experience during this course. Any pictures? Inquiring minds would like to know. :)

jim. sbell, welcome to the AH forum! I won a Savage in 338 Lapua several years ago. Never found a place big enough to really use it, so off it went! Hope you get to use yours!

Welcome to the site. Good folks here and love to share and swap experience.

Sounds like you had a great time learning to long-range distance shoot.

Welcome aboard Jim. Consistently ringing a gong at 1,000 Yds. would make my heart beat a little faster. Doing it with a 338 Lapua Mag would make my shoulder a lot sorer. But I'm only 77 and have a lot to learn.

I just saw Budsgunshop.com has both the guide gun and the African for $1150. FWIW - I bought both and decided to use the Guide gun - I restocked it in a Bell and Carlson stock and I added the Alaska arms floor plate to add a round. I wanted the shorter barrel as I will use a suppressor. I wont go lower than $1100, but I will ship it and no sales tax.

Let me know if you are interested
