First African Hunt 2027

yeah, i was thinking 15-20K just for the animals.

If you spend 20 on animals, you'll probably go over 30K on your total budget.

Gratuities are going to run you probably 1500 - 2000 for a 7 day. Air (cattle class) will be 2K +/- a bit. Booking through a travel agent like Gracey or Travel Express is another 300-ish. They're worth the money. Travel insurance - Global Rescue - won't break the bank, but it's another thing you need to buy.

The shipping charge will probably be tacked on to the taxidermy bill (assuming you have it done in ZA - I used Trophy Pro SA). Whomever you choose as your importer into the US wants their pound of flesh, too. That'll be another 1000+, probably.

Taxidermy - buff, zebra, and wildebeest hides all are tough enough you could have them turned into soft rifle cases. I had 3 rifle cases made out of my buff hide, and they sent me all the leftover hide, which is enough for several pairs of boots, some belts, watch bands, etc.

I'd budget 15K for the animals, and another 15K for everything else. If you really want a bull, you should be able to find one somewhere in Limpopo for 10-11K give or take a little. The only real difference between a barren cow and a trophy bull is the size of the trophy. The hunt will be the same challenge. They smaller, but no less ornery and wary.

I hunted with Limcroma last year, hunting with them again in 2027. They don't advertise here anymore, but I think it's mostly because they don't need to. They've been booked nearly solid for 2025 since last year, 2026 is mostly filled, and 2027 is filling up fast, too.

I considered doing the cow hunt for a while, but if this does end up being my “one and only” African hunt I don’t want to look back and regret not taking a bull. Me and my hunting partner will be shipping together, assuming that’s an option, so hopefully be able to save a little there

Yeah, I’m not completely ruling it out. This is a trip I’ve been wanting to do since I was about 9, and me and my wife decided now was a good time to do it. If I do get to go again, it would most likely be in a couple decades after kids are done with college and such. If not, I don’t want to regret not making the most of it when I got my chance

Take the kids with! I did and it was awesome! I’m not rich either I just prioritize hunting over other things like cable TV, new vehicles that aren’t needed, ATVs, Side by Sides and boats.

And No you can’t ship with your buddy. Only immediate family members can have stuff in the same crate.

Definitely do this. My hunt in the Kalahari was filmed. I still watch it regularly. Good memories and something for your future generations.

I think the shipping rule is that all animals in the crate must be on the same license.

@sgt_zim, that is a stunning Zebra! I love the color pattern of all those dark stripes. Congratulations

The outfitter I’m going with offers a video service for the hunt, would you recommend using it?
I am eagerly waiting on my video from the outfitters service. The taxidermy is cool and critical but I want to share the hunt with my family and my memory.

When my son and I go in a few years it will be filmed.

I had fun hunting my cow buff and while I would love a trophy daga boy that makes a world record, it was stalking a herd, winding them, puckered up when they squared up, and dropped a member of the Dangerous 5. I consider the experience equal to a bull for now.

I’m pretty happy you said this, cause impala was one of the species that had really caught my eye while researching. It kinda seems the closest thing in Africa to whitetail, although I’ve seen a bunch of comparison to bushbuck as well

Just wait until you see an impala up close and personal, they are a very attractive animal and a great trophy!

I would also go for a bushbuck, they are a great hunt an beautiful.

Save some money to hunt a target of opportunity such as a big warthog, any of the tiny ten. Go have the trip of a lifetime and take what Africa provides!

Unfortunately the USFWS only allows spouse and minor children to ship together. Stupid rule, what’s the difference if the paperwork is accurate.
