Just to keep this up to date more bills have come in.

    Transport from Bulawayo to Johannesburg:

Road freight BYO to JNB $156.00
    Security surcharge $25.00
    Admin fee: $95.00
    Maple Freight Document fee: $250.00
    Govt Levy: $175.00
    Total $ 701.00
So to get our trophies through dip and pack then to Johannesburg is $1401.00
    Johannesburg to Chicago: $941.11
This is it as of today: $2342.11
Still have Coppersmiths bill and shipping to the taxidermist.

IMO this whole dip/pack charges are really inflated by all involved in Africa. Not to mention all the document fees. This is where the first time safari hunter gets spooked. Hey I still get spooked to be honest!

Don’t want to hijack the original thread but appreciate the insight in the shipping costs from Bulawayo. I’m going to use Andy Hunter of Zimbabwe Dip and Pack (Harare) who charges a flat rate per crate of $500 for plains game, $650 for Buff/Giraffe. I had no clue on the shipping, I can brace for the worst now! It may end up being cheaper than the ridiculous D & P charges in the Eastern Cape.

Andy has done several of my shipments from Zim and they have always been done right. Good luck with yours, I have also used Well World (Cindy Rulon) for the shipping and import.

Got the bill last night from Coppersmith. With their fees and shipping to the tannery $782.80
So to get all of our trophies back from Zimbabwe to the taxidermist it was a grand total of:$3124.91
Now for the taxidermy bill !!!!!!!

    Brickburn,
Volumetric weight was 92.5 kgs. Package went from Zim.- Johannesburg - Jerusalem- Newark N.J.- Chicago (El Al airlines) then the tannery in Leslie, Michigan about a 2.5 hour drive from Chicago. Coppersmith charged $350.00 for their end, truck freight was $260.00 the rest was storage and transfer fees. All in all I don't see the total bill as all that bad after dealing with UPS, Fed Ex, and the Postal Service. Recently had Fed Ex quote me $450.00 to ship a 11 pound package to Australia, USPS did it for $99.00 and in 10 days no less.

Definitely skip the back skins unless you have a definite plan for some... Pillows, belts, vest, etc... I have a half dozen back skins sitting in a box that I paid D&P, shipping and tanning on, not to mention the cut the taxidermist added in. Probably a few hundred $$$$.
If you take two of something or duplicate something you alread have, consider a European mount for the extra one. Tangent to this, if a European mount is your choice, check with your taxidermist in advance if he would want the cape which you could trade for the cost of a couple or more Europeans. This of course needs to be decided in advance of the hunt.
The whole D&P, shipping, clearing procedure is a financial heart attack. Fortunately it usually comes one to three months after you get back.

    Leave the backskins......and do without
Leave the capes.........have your taxidermist buy them in the states

Just get horns and skulls shipped

I had been told it was around $400 per animal. I was kinda bummed about that. Looks like it may be a bit cheaper than I was told.

All you guy need to really ask a professional, before you GO TO AFRICA...like myself that sees Hundreds of shipping crates a year.
Find out where your hunting......the area and nearest TOWN South Africa s BIG and so are the other countries. not like states here MUCH LARGER. And their is a reasonable dip pack on every province.
Ask a taxidermist that knows africa, not your PH sometimes but not always they are on the payroll of the taxidermist as a salesman I have done business with lots of dip pack companies
who is reasonable and good. I'm sorry to say and it's my opinion , african taxidermist dip pack are prices way over priced than JUST dip pack companies, You sending out your skin dip pack huts their taxidermy income so they have to make it up somehow. The higher the cost makes it look more enticing to you to leave and mount in their shop.

Listen to @The Artistry of Wildlife, Dennis knows his stuff. I followed his recommendation and have been pleased so far.

The cost ran $120 for skull/horns/skin and $85 each for 1 flat skin and 1 warthog skull. $100 in fees (veterinary cert.) and $250 for crating. Their communication has been excellent, and my trophies should be heading to the US in another 2 months or so.

    cagkt,
Details, who is doing your dip pack? What country did you hunt? How much stuff are you shipping? I had expected my total to be higher as we hunted in Zimbabwe versus South Africa. Nothing goes directly out of Zim, it all goes to Johannesburg first. I see some posts here on cost's that I think have left a lot of details and other cost's out so I put everything we paid so others may have a better idea of the total bill.
    Thanks,
    John

Thanks for doing a nice up to cost report. Like you said with the extra part of zim your overall cost was not as bad as I thought it would be. Looks like coppersmith was more then fair at 350 for a shipment coming from zim. Shame there is so much paperwork fees but the system is set up to milk us hunters and make what they can from us.

Sorry John, should have been a bit more specific. I hunted in the Limpopo and Swift Dip is the company. 10 animals in total, and the costs I provided were obviously per animal. Breakdown is below:

    upload_2018-6-4_20-34-27.png

Nothing has shipped yet, so I will update with those costs as I get them.
