Alright, this is possibly going to create a storm but I'm going to ask. All I ask is please help keep on tack with the two calibers I'm asking about.

I'm making a dedicated Tiny 10 semi-custom rifle build and will handload the ammo for it. Do I absolutely need to, no. Am I going to because I want another gun, yes.

I'm up in the air about a .223 shooting a Barnes 70 grain TSX bullet. The other option I was looking at was a 6mm Creedmoor shooting an 80 grain bullet. Now, I realize an expanding bullet like a TTSX might be too much for the 6mm due to velocities out of that gun. Then I thought about guys that shoot the Tiny 10 with the .375 H&H with the solids. So then my thought was to go with the 6mm and shoot essentially an FMJ bullet so it doesn't expand and only punches the hole like a .375 would do. Obviously the 6mm bullet velocities are about 700-800 fps (some more based on powder selection) than the .375. For more food for thought, I'm also going to try for the Springbok slam as well on the trips.

I'm leaning more and more towards the .223 the more I think about it. However, I'm maxing out the grain weight on the .223 whereas I'm at the bottom of the grain weight for the 6mm and could load bigger bullets for deer here in the states.

Where I'll be hunting, I was told to be prepped to shoot out to about 300-350 and that could be both on flat terrain as well as you in the Eastern Cape mountains. I did some long range shooting in a former life and I've been studying ballistics and such like crazy. That said, it's paramount that I preserve the hide as much as possible because all of the Tiny 10 will be full body mounted.

So let's hear your thoughts. Thank you!

I bought a Ruger American in 6.5 Grendel with the intent to take it for T10 and impala and warthog size game. Plan on using a 120gr Barnes. If I can find a FMJ to match, that would be perfect.

If you want to punch a small hole with minimal damage at the distances you listed, something similar to a Warner Flat Line bullet made from solid copper with a good BC might work:

So far I've taken 8 Tiny Ten. I took 1 double, so I have 3 to go.
I've done it with a 416 Rigby (4) & 308 Win (4)

If it worked out that I would take one rifle for just Tiny Ten it would be something in 22 caliber that's not too fast or loud and I'd shoot solids. 22 Hornet or 223 Rem.

Last, the 416 with solids caused very little pelt damage. Point being, they can all be within 100 yards so a dangerous game rifle can work with solids if need be.

Sorry, I should have said be prepped up to 300-350 but could be as close as 20-30 yards. It's all going to depend on where we're hunting and how.

The gun will be suppressed regardless of the caliber chosen.

That's kind of what I'm trying to figure out, how fast is too fast?

Cutting Edge makes a 130gr copper solid for the 6.5 that works perfectly on the tiny antelope. Very accurate and, for me, shoots same moa as 130 Swift and Accubond. Makes a clean hole with minimal hide damage. The bonded Spitzer lets you hunt medium game with the same rifle.

Either caliber would work well. One thought would be if you go the 6mm Creedmoor route, and you run into a bigger animal, you would have enough gun to take it.

Solids certainly help. BUT if its not a broadside shot its still potentially going to make a mess of the hide. With that I think slower is better.

Suppressed is a personal choice. They should be all one shot so...

Howa mini action, also.

Food for thought…

So many of the Tiny 10 are taken at much closer ranges. The bush duikers could practically be at your feet.

My old friend carried a Browning Low Wall in .22 Hornet with a low power scope that proved to be perfect “duiker medicine”.

But your rifle will certainly get the job done, too. :)

So I need a bullet/caliber that can reach out if need be but also do close up work without ripping the little guys apart.

My dedicated Tiny Ten rifle is a Sako Mannlicher chambered .243 Winchester. I went with a 6mm over a .223 to ensure I could cover any shot angle presented.

I am about to pay off a Lipseys No.1 International in .22 Hornet that I put back expressly for the tiny ten. If I keep it, I'll put a similar low powered scope on it. I don't plan shooting it past 100 yards, really. (Not that it can't be done. I just don't feel comfortable doing it.) Great thread!

How has it done on the animals with hide preservation?

What about a 22 hornet or .222?

I think that a Leupold 6x would be ideal for shot placement on small stuff.

Hide preservation was my top priority in selecting a rifle and load combination. I handload heavy solids at low velocity levels. I worked on load development until I had a MOA combination. Like @Hedge774 I strive to keep shots under 100 yards. This combination is very easy to shoot well for shot placement.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
