Dakota 76 458 Lott Inbound!!!

I received a package full of various 458 bullets, brass and dies today. (Package deal) Rifle will be here tomorrow. Some of the bullets and dies are for sale in the classifieds. Already sold some of the bullets to a member who has an easy arm to twist. :V Poke:

I shot it 3 times off the sticks today. Loaded 500 gr Hornadys to 2100 fps. Not bad at all considering the rifle is 8.5 lbs without the scope and 9.5lbs with the scope. The rifle feeds very smoothly and has a great trigger. And that splashing sound I was telling you about yesterday is a mercury recoil reducer in the butt stock. Not water! Haha!

I did some research on the Steiner Hunting Z scope, and found it was made by Leupold with Steiner components and glass. They sold for around $800 way back in the 1990's. So, I would assume the rifle and scope are probably over 20 years old. The scope is very clear and the adjustments seem very precise.
Overall the balance and handling of the whole package is very nice. The stock has a 14" LOP, which is perfect for me. The stock also has a very open grip, and I found the recoil to be less than my 416 rifles. I think the longer LOP helps with that, and maybe that mercury recoil reducer helps too. I'm sure if I ramped my loads up to 2300 fps I would feel a big difference, but since the 450 Nitro worked so well with a 480 gr bullet at 2050-2150 FPS, I figure, what's the use?

So does the plan remain the same and change to a different scope or are you going to keep the Steiner on it?

We want an accuracy report! We want an accuracy report! We want an accuracy report!

As of now, I'm leaving the Steiner on it. I did some research and found that it was actually made for Steiner in the USA by Leupold. I wasn't sure I'd like the 30mm tube, but it's growing on me. The only thing I don't like about it is the heavy duplex crosshairs. But for a shorter range large game rifle like a 458 Lott, they will probably be ok.

Like others have said, let us know how it shoots.
I'm also interested in how it does with irons and if the mounts have any issue with return to zero.

Congrats again.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
