Last year I had plans to build a .300 RUM rifle for plains game. I ordered a Defiance Machine Deviant Hunter long action in LH, CRF with 3 position safety with Trigger Tech trigger.

However, due to possible time delays on getting it built I ended up buying a Blaser R8 with a .300 RUM barrel.

So, now I have this expensive action sitting on a shelf. I have not spent any money on firearms for a year and the firearms for my August hunt are set (.500 NE and .300 RUM), so no time pressure.

Calibers I have in big bores are .450 NE, .458 B&M, .500 NE and .500 MDM.

Considering the action was built for .300 RUM which is based on a .404 Jeffrey case I guess I could build a .404 Jeffrey.

Any other ideas, what say you?

.404 J for sure. Best resale caliber when you get a .404 barrel for your R8 and don’t need this build.

Boy, I would love to have your dilemma! LOL. That Defiance Machine action looks awesome.

A modern take on a 404J would be exciting and certainly something not seen every day.

Tanks, while a lot of different calibers could be considered, only ONE should be. My "vote" is for the 404 Jeffery.

Not wishing to sound overly practical, but you already have four elephant / buffalo rifles. :E Shrug: However, unless I missed it along the way, it looks like you have a glaring .33 gap in your battery. There are several exotic ones these days, but the .338 Win Mag is an awesome thing. Bear, elk, nilgai or dedicated PG, a lot of uses can be found for one. It also would look great in traditional or modern livery.

Whet Red Leg said +1. My .338 Win Mag is a Ruger 77 with tang safety, glass bedding, MagnaPorting, and a comfy carry sling. Accurate with bullets from 210-250 grains , and maybe more. I used it in Africa with Winchester 230 grain FailSafe bullets on PG from Impala to Eland - 7 one shot kills. A 210 grain Nosler PP Texas heart shot stopped this runaway bull elk in Colorado. I think a 400 H&H would be the cats pajamas on that action. Modern meets classic.

Well, going that route I do have a .375 H&H McMIllian Heritage that I have never fired and never intend to use. So, I could re-barrel it in the future if I don't find a lefty that would like to buy it. Though, for the purposes you mentioned my .300 RUM with 200 grain Accubonds at 3,100 fps should do the job. Another option is 9.3x62 but that is a different size action than what I have not to mention there is a Blaser barrel for that as a cheaper option.

I have talked to Mark Bansner at www.bansnerandcompany.com about barreling the action in .404J with NECG sights etc., and then sending it to Accurate Innovations for stocking. I should receive a quote in a week or so.
