Hello all, new here, but seems like lots of practical wisdom and experience among folks. Im in the process of building a new rifle in 458 win and would like to build it on a Brno 600 action. Has anybody here ever done one of those conversions? Have been trying to get a good answer on magazine capacity but info is all over the place. Was hoping to get 4 +1 without going to the magnum 602 action.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well actually I have done just that & put a .458 ZKK 602 barrel on a .270Win ZKK 600 action.

Unfortunately I’m still waiting to get my CZ550 9.3x62 factory stock (which is reinforced) from the US to finish it & I might dock the barrel back to 20-21in.

This stock.

yes should be able get 5 rds into magazine

No that is no correct for a magnum cartridge in a ZKK 600 action, it was made for long standard cartridges all the magnums were were chambered in ZKK 602 actioned rifles.

I will check mine but I haven’t as yet modified the ZKK 600 magazine box, I’m thinking 3 cartridges will be more like it & you hardly ever need that many even when using good bullets in a .458 Win.

Is the 600 conversion going to be an issue? Should i just build on the 602 action? Or just switch completely to pre 64 winchester....this is the mental gymnastics im going through...

One of my main reasons for building on the Brno action is i like the pop up peep sight. I dont see the barrel mounted sight as good as I did 20 years ago. I haven't come across an alternative yet.

Id be interested in knowing what you find out Sarg on the mag capacity.

Sorry @ozarkrambler don’t see your post, you need to quote or add my name so I know to look.

I really like the old Brnos but the ZKK 602 is a huge long action & far more than what is needed for the .458Win Mag as much as I like the .458Win the .458 Lott is a better fit in a ZKK 602 that is why I made it on a ZKK 600, it holds three, really that is plenty as a client hunter.

If you don’t really want a Brno yes go ahead & get yourself a nice factory Winchester in .458 Win & save any headaches.

Oh a major major on opening the bolt face to Magnum specs on a Brno bolt, the bolt face is incredibly hard & even my tungsten cutter struggled to open it, hopefully a proper Gunsmith would have less trouble but I don’t think so, as I opened my Ruger bolt face with significant ease !

Sorry, not sure how to do the quote thing.
Not saying I have to have it or will do it, but can mag work be done to add that extra shell?

What are your thoughts on the pop up peep sight? Is it worth having, functional, usable?

To open up hard bolt faces you can get a special hard insert( can’t remember the name) but they are expensive and you need to buy a packet of ten, or you can set up a dremel in a cross slide holder and grind it, I gave my holder to my friend, it was fairly agricultural but worked.
Gumpy

It is easier to do on a 602 action.

Im sure it is, and if I can find a 602 with the peep thats what I'd use...ive got a 600 which is influencing me a little bit....

Wow, I thought you were going to convert it to 600 H&H

Ha! That would be a project....plus I'd be s ared to shoot it. Im a little apprehensive going to 458 but I shoot my 375 pretty good so I think I can learn it.

Hey Steve, This is Steve Washington we met at KMG last year. I am interested in your Winchester. Would love to speak with you about it. I work third shift and I cannot take a phone with me to work. Let me know a good time to call during one of your mornings. My phone is 239 565-8988. Live in Florida so I have to account for the time difference.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Good day, Slider.

Do you by any chance have any 500NE brass left that you are willing to part ways with?

Best regards,
Boela Bekker.
