Back country carry gun

@Neophyte - i guess we have very different experiences and opinions of Law Enforcement…. Overall, I think the vast majority are very good people and many are Outstanding, trying their best to do a good job under difficult situations and return home safely at the end of their shift.
Most don’t remember the oath they swore to uphold by the time they graduate the academy.

That comes before enforcing the law.

@Neophyte - fortunately you are in the very small minority that has a “low opinion” of Police in general, there are well over a 100,000 + Law Enforcement officers in this Country and vast majority are good-to-very-good people and do their job. They have to make quick decisions (which you should know) and later face endless “2nd guessing” about those decisions… criticizing the entire Police population is unjustified by any measure and No One has enough experience or facts to make that type of statement and back it up. I’ve never been a Cop but broad generalizations about an entire population or profession are rarely true. We’ll have to end on that note because this is no longer a productive discussion….we are on different levels.

Clearly an uninformed, unsubstantiated, unsupported, and genuinely ridiculous statement…

By the same standard that you espouse one could argue your broad generalization that “most are good to very good people and do their job” is unfair to those that do uphold their oath.

In my experience most don’t. They look the other way or make excuses instead of doing their job. They go along to get along because the culture of policing is corrupted in this country.

I see law enforcement like a vicious dog that needs to be kept on a tight chain. Over utilized by politicians that make everything a crime and their paramilitary structure breeds the “Us against Them” attitude.

So what exactly is your experience that brings you to this conclusion?

I used to get my paycheck from the USDA.
That’s not the agency I worked for.

I used to get a paycheck from the world bank… but that wasn’t the agency I was working for at the time either…

Your point is?

You asked for my experience but I’m unwilling to disclose too much.
Obviously you know are smart enough, or know enough, that I was some type of federal law enforcement.
I have my opinions gained by my experience. You have yours. I’ve had too many beers with coworkers and locals about violating people’s rights to trust the system.

@mdwest: I use to get a U.S. Government Savings Bond on my birthday and a Basket from the Easter Bunny….but I worked for neither

What do you offer as an alternative to the system you distrust so much? It is easy to criticize, not so easy to offer constructive ideas. We need the soccer moms and dads to help us keep our 2nd amendment, walking into a grocery store with a rifle or visible handgun is stupid, get a concealed carry permit and keep it under your jacket. I have a friend now retired who was the agent in charge of the DFW FBI office, he dislikes the current FBI leadership.

I offer you nothing except that which you can take for yourself.

I'm considering a Ruger Alaskan vs S&W 69 - both in .44 Magnum. The Ruger is about $200 more - do you guys think it's worth it?

I'm in AZ, but I do find myself hiking in Montana usually once each summer.
Just a suggestion. Unless you are a LARGE guy that 2.5" barrel isn't gonna give you much chance of a second shot.

Ruger Only level .45 Colt loads work just fine. Penetrate very well and they run through the .454 Casull just fine. Just have to remember to scrub the grunge ring in the cylinder when you switch back to .454 Casull loads or you'll raise chamber pressures to OOOPS levels.

I like my .452 caliber Rugers. All of them.

@yamoon - he offers nothing——don’t get trolled

The 45 Colt with a good bullet, at Ruger load levels is a pretty potent package. Another companion favorite is a 45 Colt Ruger Bisley with a 3.75" barrel.

The 454 Casull / 45 Colt revolvers do give one options. I have no hesitation using heavy 45 Colt loads in my 454's. I bought one of the 4-5/8" Ruger Bisley 454's specifically for that.

When in the backwoods west of the Mississippi, I carry an FK Brno in 7.5 FK. I’ve taken down adult wild boar with one shot. East of the river a SIG in 10mm with hard cast or swifts is used. Both in a chest rig

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France
