Any way to muffle a .375 Porting/Muzzle Brake?

Hello Everyone. I am getting close to purchasing my first .375 H&H. The one I am looking at has the barrel ported pepper-pot style, not a removable style. I have read a lot that the PH and their crews really do not appreciate ported barrels due to the sound wave coming back at them. Has anyone come up with a creative way to muffle that blast even if it gives up the positive effect of the porting?

Consider the fact that countless hunters have used a .375 without a muzzle brake for more than 100 hundred years now. Therefore, my solution would be to shorten the barrel by cutting the brake off and re-crowning . . . of course that would only be practical if the rifle were such a good deal as to make it cost effective. Otherwise I’d simply look to buy a .375 sans any porting or a brake.

I’m one who strongly dislikes muzzle brakes . . . but to each his own. Good luck and good hunting to you!

I have a removable brake on my 375. As long as the PHes know and are aware of when you are shooting, all of mine seemed OK with it. Just don’t surprise them shooting when they are in the blast zone.
That said, if you can handle the recoil without the brake, personally I believe you are better off. Reasons: people at the range won’t whine; your PH and trackers don’t have to be so alert of your firing; you won’t be carrying extra inches of barrel through the bushes which tend to grab the ports IME.
The 375 H&H is about the maximum recoil I can comfortably handle and get back on target for a second shot. I went with a muzzle brake when I bought mine because I had suffered with a torn retina. I didn’t want it to happen in Africa while out in the bush.

Is it possible to purchase an extra .375 bore barrel for the rifle and then switch the barrel ?

Or have it rebarreled with a nice custom barrel of your choice

All of those are options but add to the cost of the rifle. The one I am looking at already looks to have been rebarreled with the pepper pot ported barrel.
I was hoping someone had something more high tech than the local recommendation I got at the range of 12” strips of cotton blanket and duct tape......I admit I do shoot with some MW rednecks
Unless someone has something creative, I guess I will keep my eyes open for a deal on one with a break (preferable thread on) or pick up a standard without a brake and see how it shoots without it.

Cut it off...or find one that does not have this fitted...

There are way more .375's out there without a BRAKE than there are with them. Lots of choices. Like they say in New Joisy, "fugettaboutit".

You really don't need a brake with a 375 H&H unless you're really recoil sensitive (not a bad thing some folks just are), or if you have shoulder or retina issues. A long time ago I bought a BDL in 270 instead of the "brand new 7mm Mag" cause I was worried about recoil. Now I shoot a 500 Jeffery. Everyone's different.

If you can shoot someone else’s 375 H&H before you make a choice. I would go without the muzzlebrake. Get a stock that fits you right, that makes a big difference in felt recoil.

By the way the BDL in 270 Win was a great choice. Killed many elk, deer, javelina and 9 bears with it. My son now owns it If you do get a muzzle brake get one that can be taken off an a thread protector can be screwed on.

My 5 foot tall daughter's elk gun is a left handed Weatherby Mark V in Weatherby 7MM Magnum which was tough on her at the bench rest , so I had the barrel threaded and a removable brake installed. She uses the brake when practicing from the bench rest and removes it when hunting.

Just an idea.... isn't it possible to cut a thread all over the pepper-pot styl port and a screw a thread protector over it.

A solid one, and soldered or glued if necessary.

I think at that point, I’d be better cutting it off and threading the new muzzle for a removable brake or thread protector.

Before doing anything, I'd first shoot it and see how much the ports add to the sound. It may not be that much. Then, if it's not to your liking, you could have it cut, recrowned and threaded.

Ridgewalker you may take a look at the SilencerCo Hybrid, its bored out enough to accommodate .45 cal rifles so would definitely work for the .375 H&H..
