So, I was watching a cape buffalo "hunt", not paying too much attention, and the guide says. "The one with the red tag in his ear"...

Sure enough, gun goes bang down goes Mr. Red tag.

So then, there are "barnyard hunts" in Africa just like here in the states??? Is that correct?

Wow...sure threw me for a loop...

It seems like there is.
I was reading a thread on a UK hunting forum where one member replied to it regarding his first African hunting experience.
Driven to tame animals, stalking up to animals completely unafraid of humans, tags in their ears, small enclosures.
I have asked the member's permission to copy his answer here.

Do be careful booking any hunt, but particularly in South Africa. It can be an excellent hunting experience on a large property, or a pretty ugly "put and take" shooting exercise on a small one.

Unfortunately there are some rather "tame" animals hunted in RSA and other places. That is one of the questions to ask before booking a hunt. Some of the more valuable animals in RSA are kept where an eye can be kept on them. So they can become somewhat habituated to people. Thus not so much of a hunt.
Sometimes ear tags are used to help evaluate breeding stock. Keep track of individual animals. They should at least remove them before a hunter is turned loose to hunt one. Bad form......

Boma Hunts is what I call them.

Read discussions on free range, high fence, etc. etc. etc.
There are plenty on here. It is an education.

For me, I have no want, need or desire to enter into an arrangement where it can easily be properly called, "a canned hunt", but no matter how large the penned area is, it is still a pen hunt.

BUT! I guess that there is no shame in slaughtering an animal that was conceived, and raised for the expressed purpose to be slaughtered by guys with guns or bows be it a great cat, a cape or an elan ....what ever.

!

The place where I hunted (26k acres one single high fenced property) did have some animals with ear tags, but they were off limits for hunting and they where there for breeding purposes (to help prevent in-breeding). You could only shoot born there animals. The only tame animals I saw there were horses, mules and one pet Springbok.

@wesheltonj I hunted a ranch where the owner had purchased some very large Impala rams to introduce some new genetics into the herd. They had ear tags and were off limits.
The buffalo referred to in the thread may have previously been a breeding bull and was past his prime. An ear tag doesn’t mean the animal is tame.

Yep,true,we have 1/2 a dozen Angus Bulls here that are tagged but it would be a brave man to try and ride one.

I don't even want to know an animal that has a hole in its ear (tag removed)

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts
