Ammo carriers

At the risk of introducing an element of kitsch to this thread :ROFLMAO: , for those of you with really nice leather goods, I've used these for a bunch of years. I buy them on eBay (I believe they're like 15 bucks); they're a combination of leather, elastic and canvas. I like how they look and I've had no issues with them whatsoever.

Here is a question for those who hunt in extreme heat. do you have any concerns with open top cartridge carriers allowing for heating via direct sunlight heat of the base of the cartridge possibly increasing chamber pressure against those who favour the flap over type of carrier.

Good question. All I can say is that to my knowledge I’ve never had an issue and every PH I’ve hunted with has used the open style.

Do you think the sunlight would generate more heat than the primer/powder going off?

No but I have read of ammo being left on dash of vehicle at the range on a hot day and generating higher pressure with visible evidence round the primer pocket and there have always been reccomendations to be wary of doing load work in a cold climate and then hunting in a hot climate so that was the genesis of the question.

I agree with WAB. I think the least of my worries while quickly reaching for a round is whether or not its warm may effect its accuracy.

I’ve heard the same thing regarding ammo heating up on the dash. However, I can’t imagine that kind of heat could be generated on your belt. If nothing else, your body is at 98.6’F which is much cooler than what you would get in the sun on a dash. Ambient temps when I have been hunting have maxed slightly above 100’F on the hottest days in the Kalahari. I do my load development in Alabama with temps likely in the mid 80’s. So far no issues but it is an interesting watch out if you are doing cold weather load development.

Has anyone used the canvas slide(s) from Trader Keiths instead of leather?

I haven't had the chance to big hunt but growing up my father was a side-by-side shotgun man he never had one without electric windows(ejectors).I learned to carry in my right top pocket shell loops .in the thick two between the left fingers.he was so fast the game Warden stopped him figuring he had the plug out of his automatic shotgun for deer hunting couple extras in the pocket.i think for me the built in belt would work well but 2 in the gun two between the fingers and 4 on each side of jacket should be enough.my double has ejectors and seems to be at least a partial self opener. So practice practice.

I carry extra ammo (10-12 rounds) in a trifold cloth looped wallet in my pocket or in a day pack. I have used one of the elastic slip over butt stock carrier loops quite a bit for non-dangerous game similar to what TT pictured on his "Marlene". However, for dangerous game, I use a leather slide on my belt where the cartridges are both easy to get to yet secure enough they won't fall out if crawling or running. I modified the one I have to allow easy one handed retrieval of rounds yet the rounds are covered and secured.... but no snaps or clips or anything that could impede getting cartridges out. I put my knives, gadgets, nicknacks, multi-tools, water and extra "stuff" in my day pack. I really hate carrying a heavy, lopsided loaded belt. Too uncomfortable for walking any distance not to mention don't need junk in the way if I need to get to extra cartridges for loading during DG follow up. For DG, practice running and loading under stress at the range. Might be revealing. Chances are pretty good many DG hunts will happen that way.

Here is what I use. A ten round flap over cases for PG and a four round, spaced in pairs, case for the double for DG. Both have belt loops. I'll also have a couple rounds in my pocket.

I like the flaps but for another reason, to keep snow off my cartridges.

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
