416 WSM first range trip

None yet, but I’ve maxed out those powders and am happy with the Speer loads. Have to see what else I can try for the 350gr TTSX. Wanna hit 2250fps. Availability limited here. I even tried H4350 as I have lots on hand but only got 1750fps slightly compressed load.
Maxed out case volume? I’m going to start building my 416 loads and curious on which powders to try. I have some 4895 and hate buying powder at these prices only to find they aren’t suitable. My barrel length is 20” and I beleive yours is 22”?

Barrel is just under 20”. With Speer 350 I could squeak a little more 4895 in the case but 3031 is maxed. Most on the site are using Accurate 2520 but I haven’t been able to get any.
I’m happy w/the Speer bullets, just want to juice up the Barnes 350gr TTSX a little more.
Think I can get some BL-C2 and try it.
Good luck.

My other thoughts on powders is to find the most temp stable as this rifle will likely be in Africa after Buffalo and Alaska for bears. Anyone tried 8208XBR?

Hodgdon's H4895 is manufactured in Australia and is sold here as AR2206H. It is specified as being temperature stabilised. I easily get 2400fps with 350Speer hotcores with a 21" barrel.

Fired some cartridges with Barnes 350gr TTSX, Winchester 748 powder today, 62, 63, 64gr slightly compressed.
No time for Chrony info, just checked for pressure signs, all ok, shot great.

The 416 ruger is a good round and would work as the big brother to your 35/375.

I am thinking the 416 WSM would be a fantastic AK bear round.
How would it compare to the 416/348? case capcity etc

I clearly have the winter blues... I have a donor rifle in my shop, and your project got me thinking that a .375 WSM would be cool too... particularly because I have lots of brass and bullets... before I finished my coffee, and cleared my head, I had the reamer, dies and barrel on the way! I need this like a hole in the head, but WTH, life is too short to be boring.
Hi
I just loaded some 375WSM 270gr barnes with ADI 2208 for 2590FPS

With 350gn Speer hotcore 70gn of AR2206H gave 2417fps
With 400gn Hornady 67gn of AR2206H gave 2251fps
Neither load had pressure signs.
Also tried some 416WSM 400 gr Hornady RN with 57gr IMR3031 with some room for more, again no chrony but no pressure signs. Whacking 10” gong at 100yds no problem.

@dlmac the 416/348 will have more case capacity, based on the parent cartridge. Either the 416WSM, 416B&M, or the 416/348 will be a hammer on most anything you want to shoot. all will exceed the 450/400 ballistics with 350 or 400 gr bullets.

I am very pleased with my 416WSM.

Thank you for the information and reply. I have a couple of siamese actions and was think of the 416/348 or the 400 Fuller project. The 416 WSM might be something to watch. I have a 416 taylor and 450/400.

I think the Taylor is a better choice after doing the 416WSM but don’t regret it. 458Win mag cases should be easy to get and form to Taylors and there is lots of published data.

If you are going to build on a Siamese Mauser action, then the 416WSM is the best choice due to the cartridge length of 2.950" and the Taylor @ 3.340.
If you are going down the 416/348W cartridge then you need to open the bolt face unless it has previously been modified for 45/70.

For a virgin Siamese Mauser I would go with 416WSM as it is the easiest conversion. Or any of the WSM family would be possible.

Didn’t you have to open the bolt face on the Siam action for the WSM? I think the case head is 0.535”, just over the standard magnum 0.532”. Regular mausers are 0.473” head diameter, not familiar with Siam mauser dimensions.

No- the Siamese Mauser cartridge was a rimmed cartridge and the rim diameter was 0.555, so if anything the bolt face is a little too open. It is feeding and ejecting perfectly after adding the 0.8mm plate to the right hand side of the magazine box.

350gr TTSX w/ 64gr W748 Choreographed only 2140fps compressed load.
Think I’ll give up on the 350gr TTSX Barnes in the WSM and stick with shorter Lead bullets. The 300gr Barnes are only 1.256” long, may try in future.

I used to run the 350 TSX in the 416 B&M..... using 78/WW 748 for 2458 fps at 53600 PSI. I Never really explored other loads with the 350 TSX, this worked so good. I did use AA 2520 a good bit early on with 350 Barnes FN solids (Pre-CEB #13s) and 350 Swift A Frames. AA 2520 was a little more volatile 2400-2450 fps but higher pressures at 60000 PSI or so.

Later I did a lot of work with RL 15 in the 416 B&M, 350 #13 Solids 78/RL 15 at 2447 fps and 54400 PSI.

All these were in 20 inch guns.

You guys with the 416 WSM really need to take a serious look at the 225 Raptors. If you don't, you are missing the boat. For anything less than buffalo this bullet will slam animals to the dirt. I even shot several Aussie Buffalo with it in 2013 or so. Complete pass through on big cows. What more would you want. It has been used on many other critters with incredible success. I run it an easy 2900 fps in the B&M at or around 57000 PSI with RL 7 or H-4198. I am sure you could get 2750-2800 in the WSM case with those same powders.........

Back After a Long Time – Hello Again!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been a member since 2015 but haven’t been active since 2017. Life got busy, especially with building my second business. Still, I’ve kept my passion for hunting and followed things from afar. Now that I have more time, I’m excited to reconnect, contribute, and be part of the community again.

All the best,
ANDY

I'd like a bag of 100. I could actually pick it up since I'm in North Irving, but if you prefer, shipping it is fine.
