Searched to the forum, could not find what I was looking for.
I am looking to develop a lighter load for my 375HH to reach out a bit further/flatter. Thinking of either a nosler bullet (accubond or partion) or barnes LRX.
Looking for hints on a load, powder etc. Win m70 25inch barrel.
Thank you

I tried some 250g trophy bonded bearclaw loads that were clocking 2690 fps from my rifle. But, they shot 6" higher at 100y and by 250y they were wheezing and dropping like a stone and velocity was already below 2000fps at 250y. I just kept my Barnes 300g TSX and learned to read the distance and compensate out past about 250y. I zero at 200y. Still would not shoot animals with it past 300y but have shot some great groups on steel out to 400y with that load. It drops 2.5 mil at 400y. I am getting 2580fps from the 300g Barnes.

You might get better ballistics with the Barnes LRX on another bullet with a boat tail.

I use and like the 260 Nosler Partition ahead on Re 15 at about 2800 on my Labradar.

To hunt at longer distances, you need a soft bullet that will reliably expand at lower velocities (around 1,800 fps). The Partition is one option but bonded bullets and monolithics are not...the best on the market is probably the Hornady SP-RN Interlock 270gr, as it expands more consistently and can perform reliably out to 400 meters (440 yards).

I have a 250gr ttsx load worked up for a m70 (which was recently sold here on this forum). It was my “North American” load. My recollection is that I had it dialed in at about 2600fps so that it would mimic a 338wm load

I believe I was running h4350 because I have a silly amount of it

Recoil was better than full house loads although that rifle was fairly heavy so recoil generally wasn’t an issue

I’ll have to check my reloading log for you.

Exactly why a good friend uses speer hot cor 235s for this. They also make a 270 if you wanted a heavier bullet. He uses 82 grs of H380. Here's Speers data.

The 235g TSX in the 375HH is clocking 3100fps and still runs vel of 2066fps at 400y. I have not hunted with it as I chose to use my 338wm for the longer range hunting with 225g load. But, this is a hotrod. The monos will expand reliable as long as you keep impact velocities above 2000fps and even the lighter once penetrate well. I am not huge fan of the TSX but it is hard to deny its results in the field. I am thinking about using it on Moose later this year. Just to be clear, I do not shoot animals at 400y. That is too far for my taste. Even 300y is pushing my limits. I can usually get closer before I need to send it. If I was hunting Pronghorn in Wyoming, I might but not with a 375, lol. 7 mag or 243.

I agree with your comments, and this 235-grain bullet is probably very effective (2100 fps being the limit for reliable expansion for TSX). I hunt with 168-grain TTSX bullets in a .308 Win... These are very, very effective cartridges with good penetration up to 200 meters. As you mentioned, 400 m is already a long hunting distance that requires ballistic corrections.

Best regards

What distance you want? 300grn good for 330 yards if you can shoot.......
What you want to hunt?

Na elk and large plains game. 400 yards and in.
I load 235gr tsx & 235 hotcore over 81gr 4350 @3000+/- fps , it’s good to go on anything but dangerous stuff, but I personally don’t think imo a 375 is good past 300 meters. I base my opinion on
We always need more brass so I practice some with Hornady outfitter 250gr cx and 270gr interlock, Federal 270gr , we have 3 .375’s
1 . Winchester m70 safari ( no scope anymore only fiber optic express ) so we only 50m
2. Sig Sauer 202 ( Trijicon Credo® HX 2.5-10x56)
3 Remington 700 375Ruger 24 inch barrel ( leupold 3-9x illuminated)

All are pretty much +/- 1 MOA on the bench , but off sticks or bipod things change on accuracy ( at least for me ) so I don’t even try anymore past 300 meters with a 375 .
Caliber , guns are capable! But Impractical for LD hunting imo .

Barnes 250 gr TTSX are the most accurate bullet from my 375 H&H. The trajectory as shot at range is
50 +1
100 +2.5
210 0
300 -11
I don’t know the load offhand but it’s Barnes listed maximum with RL15. Generally with 300 gr bullets I’m -20 at 300 yards so it’s an improvement.

You can try Hornady CX. No matter what the monolith is, it will open enough to shoot the animal, and even if it doesn't fall right away, you'll have a huge blood trail. For the distance at which you want to shoot, I think this is a good projectil. It is only important that the barrel twist be ok. Otherwise, I believe that the 375 is not made for the distances at which you want to hunt. If I wanted to hunt at these distances, I would try this bullet. I wish you good hunting

I have had the opportunity to use Nosler Partition and Accubond 260 gr for hunting in my Blaser R93. The Partition was my favourite, and the most accurate of both. I used it mainly in driven hunt but also a little bit in Africa and I killed a gemsbok at 306 meters with it. I was able to push it at ~ 2830 f/s with the Reload Swiss 52 powder.
The Accubond, at least in my rifle, was more picky and with the same powder, the accuracy was bad. I tried to use another powder, the Reload Swiss 60, that was very promising in theory on quickload 3.9. But in practice, this powder was too slow for such weight and I only had ~2620 f/s. The accuracy was quite good but I expected something better ! I have never really use it at long distance. My longuest shot was probably a boar at around 100 meters.

I don't know how it works on game, but I also played a bit with the Sierra Game King 250 gr. With my Leica scope and its ballistic turret, it was almost easy to hit gongs up to 500 meters with a very good rest. The powder used was the Somchem S341 because I was in Namibia and that time, it was the only brand that was available.

H4895 and 250gr North Fork SS works well in my M70. Loaded to 2850fps. Varget worked too, but I was getting pressure signs at just a little less than 2850. But there was still an accurate load with Varget.

I have hunted with the Barnes 250g TTSX a bit and shot Kudu, , Zebra, Mountain Reedbuck and Impala with total satisfaction in Limpopo. My load uses Reload Swiss RS60 (which is the same powder as Reloader 17) and gave me 2860fps and silly small groups as you can see on the picture below. I was pleased to get evidence of expansion and an exit wound on a zebra that I killed with a single shot at around 150-175 metres. Terminal velocity would be around 2500fps.

The longest ever shot I have taken on game was 314y on a Black Wildebeest in Free State RSA. We were unable to stalk any closer due to the flat open terrain and the very wary animals. I had a solid rest with my 7mm/08 loaded with a Barnes TTSX 140g bullet. Shot was a frontal slightly quartering to my left and it hit about 2" lower than I had wanted despite my holdover for bullet drop. The bullet passed thru the brisket and did damage the heart (slightly) and passed out the right side hitting the beest in the right rear ankle. It dropped in its tracks and never regained its feet. It did require a finishing shot. Later evidence would indicate that the actual distance was further than the laser range finder said due to tall grass in front of the target. I used the same load at 242y to take a Springbok with one shot, DRT. Also used a Hornaday 139g CX on a hunt in Limpopo on a running Warthog at about 70y that hit behind the ribs and nearly gutted it as it passed forward killing the animal instantly. The CX load is a bit faster than the Barnes but both are exceptionally accurate. It has nothing to do with long range 375's other than the fact that the Barnes TSX will open reliably in long range shots as long as you know your ammo and do not ask more of it than it can do. Keep speeds up at the impact distance and it will work. Personally however, I have had even better results with Federal Fusions. Those have been my go to if I can get them.

Son and I have used the 270s extensively. It's the do-all round in 375, but probably excepting elephant.

400 yds is not really long range. Any decent load will do what you want to do at that distance. This shouldn't be a trick.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
Impala cull hunt for camp meat!
