I have the chance to get a 356 Winchester.
I like it’s brother the 358.
But you can still find ammo for the 358.
The last load I know of was Winchester 200 gr load for the 356. It was a seasonally loaded ammo then.
Every where I looked on line says back order or discontinued.
Found a coustom loader that loads 3 different loads 89-119 per box.
It would come with 8 boxes of the Winchester loads.
The only reason I am thinking about it. It’s a traid and I would be training a try star 410 for it.

But since I am not a handloader I am not sure .
Also I have a 358

If you can get that rifle in trade for a Tri Star, I would get it. Sounds like you'll have enough brass to keep it shooting if you just get a set of dies.

I want one pretty bad. My first deer rifle was a 307 win I was about 14 and I wanted a lever action my dad took me to look at browning BLR and a savage 99 I wanted the traditional looking lever rifle being from Utah my dad told me you want kind of flatter shooting gun than a 30/30. Don't know why 30/30 does fine but we decided on the 307 win I still have it today. I bought a 444 Marlin in a model 94 and I am always on look out for a 356 win.

I made the mistake of selling a model 94 in 307 Win

We found a 250gr. Hornady RN with 44gr. H335 to work well on close Moose, from a .356 Winchester M94. My bro used it as a backup when guiding.
Work up from 42gr., carefully. Our Vel. was 2,150fps. Wasn't max, but close. I flattened the noses.

I have fond memories of the .356 Winchester. The shop I worked for in the late '80s rechambered Contenders from 35 Rem to .356 Win to avoid the headspace problems encountered with the 35 Rem.
I hunted with one for several years using the 200 gr Speer Flat points, very effective for whitetails.

I worked up loads with the 220gr. IIRC, i got 2,450fps. with those and 2,600fps with the 200gr. In the .356Winch.

If you want a lever action Winchester 356 I would get it....they haven't been made in years and there not going to be made !

Would start hand loading also you can feed your 358 and the 356 on the burner !

Whats great about handloading the 358 is in a bolt action you can top the velosities on factory ammo. I've used one for decades !

You could always get a custom Encore barrel in that caliber.

Dyslexic don’t think hand loadings safe
When you see numbers wrong.
59.1 could easily be seen as 91.5 or any combination

The guy was supposed to call yesterday. Have not heard anything yet.
Who knows he is a older gentleman so there could be a number of reasons
Or he changed his mind

Was thinking if I did get it I could sell the ammo that came with it for enough to send it to jes and have it made in 375 win

What ever you do "DO NOT" change it to any other caliber it worth to much ! It will be worth very little !

If you want a 375 Winchester I've seen them for $1000, I just pass on one local !

Isn’t that about the same around 1k is what I have seen the 356-307 and 375 all go for locally in say the last 5 years

The .356 is much better ballistically, due to about the same pressure levels and a much larger case than the .375 Win. I made much of my brass for the .375 out of blown-out .30/30's. They worked just fine with all .375 load data.
On top of the increased ballistics, .358 Winchester brass can be used, but not in the tubular magazine due to rim diameter.
We used some blown out .308 Win brass for grouse loads using cast 9MM bullets & Unique, I think the powder was IIRC. The POI was right on the post of a duplex reticle scope at 25 yards. That made head shooting grouse very easy with the rifle.

Ok he not going through with the traid saw what the ammo was worth.
No big deal to me
Now he said something about a 99 on 250-3000 savage I have to find out if it’s a early one with 1-14 twist
And a xtr modle 70 featherweight ( mr Bob don’t kill me ) in 243.
No I am not interested in the 243 so it would be something to traid for something else.
Or if it has sights a nice light weight 358 barrel.

@Flbt
If'n you aren't a handloader forget it you already have a 358.
From memory you can use 358 dies for it and 398 dies for the 307 win.
Bob

Yes. 358 dies will work fine for the .356 and yes, .308 for the .307. Typing too fast, Bob. NP.
Winchester did have a 250gr. Factory load as well, chronographing just over 2,050fps iirc.
We ran the 250gr. Hornady around, now going by memory, have it written down somewhere
but that rifle is gone now. 2,150fps seems about right. The .358 will do better by 100 or more fps.
We did test 200gr. Speers at 2, 650fps or so. The 220's at over 2,400fps.

@Mike53
From memory the 358 win dies will work just need a new shell holder. A mate uses 308 dies to load his 307.

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
