PPU 9.3X62 285gr jsp factory load

Quick Revival of this thread.

Haven't put the ammo to use on any big game, but it has proven quite effective on a couple of coyotes that I called in, and one young mountain lion that Ruby treed after she jumped it on a trail very close to my house.

I recently picked up one of the new Ruger Alaskan Bush rifles in 9.3x62.

It is proving to be an exceptional rifle. I bought a couple of boxes of PPU 285 grain and they shot very well, which is wonderful because they are readily available and currently priced way below any of the other factory loads.

I then went ahead and bought a case of 200 just to have a good supply on hand.

While I certainly understand these are not premium loads for Dangerous Game.
All of my hunting here in the mountains would be shots taken at under a hundred yards. I'm thinking this 285gr soft point bullet would be just fine for my local deer, elk, black bear, Etc.

Does anybody have any actual experience of taking medium sized game with this specific bullet/load?

Thanks for any insight.
I have taken deer and hogs with this load in my CZ 550 FS with 21” barrel. It shoots .75-1.25” groups at 100 yards. Through and throughs on everything I shot. The biggest plus for me is minimal meat loss.

There will be no problem with that ammo. She will take down all animals up to the big 5 without any problems. I just don't know what her accuracy is. I don't think she is capable of long distances

I'm getting around 1-in groups with my Alaskan Bush rifle and truthfully that's about as tight as I can personally shoot. I'm quite happy with the ammo at this point.

Greetings. The rifle looks nice in the picture. I see that …….. as a journalist for a hunting magazine tha……..Recommendation: check on all LOT boxes, because the places of hits on the targets can differ significantly. There may still be differences in grain hardness between series, it may oscillate (harder/softer), but this is not so significant in a bullet weighing around 300 gr. I Wish you good hunt!!!
I’ve also noticed big differences in POI between batches of PPU ammunition in their 9.3 x62 and 375 H&H loads. As much as 4 inches at 100 yards between batches. But all batches I’ve shot were accurate in my rifles.

Ditto, my friend!

I havent shot any critters with PPU anmuntion but I have used it extensively for target practice and plinking.

In my experience PPU has been "ok" ammunition. There is definitely differences between batches of ammo. But if you get a couple boxes from the same batch that shoot well, im sure they will work just as well as most other generic cup & core bullets. If anything, the fact that they tend to run slow might help prevent the basic bullets from blowing up.

Id personally avoid any high velocity PPU ammunition though. I don't think id trust heir fragile bullets from a 300 WM.

I definitely understand what you guys are talking about with different batches of ammo. I found a great price on this ammunition and bought a case (200rds) when I discovered it shot well in my rifle.

I got to thinking that I would probably be better off getting a little bit more so I contacted the distributor and ultimately bought three more cases of it, all from the same lot number. It's going to take me a really long time to burn through 800 rounds of this stuff!

Catahoula Leopard dog. With Bloodlines right out of Louisiana. Simply an outstanding dog.

I got her as a 7 week old pup on my 60th birthday, made the decision that I'm going to become one of those guys that takes his dog everywhere he goes. She can spend three nights at a five-star hotel, play with a yard full of little kids, or pursue any cat or bear that you point her at in the woods.

Priceless !

Or keeping an eye out for grizzly bears when we hiked into a high mountain lake. (Thats my .416 leaning against the bush during a snack break.)

Yes, it happens. The reason for the shift in hits in different series is due to the different composition of the lead. PPU doesn't always get the same lead, so the hits are different

@Miletic
What about that guy in PPU factory who liked to take few shots of plumb brandy during his shift at assmebly line at PPU, you told me about?

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
