Green Lighted for Kudu - Where To?

I hope people are hearing his request,

He said he is really looking for a hunt where he can glass and be in more "varried" terrain

One thing about @GAME 4 AFRICA SAFARIS , they say they have both southern greater kudu in their north camp and eastern cape kudu in the south. Looking at the size from up north I would tend to agree.

If life ever lets me get back there I intend to take full advantage of this and take both in a single trip.
You can’t go wrong with G4A, great people as well.
 
Hard to beat the Eastern Cape for a rugged spot and stalk Kudu hunt. As others have said it is a subspecies and in general not as big as greater southern kudu. I hunted with Kei River Hunting Safaris and Andrew produces exceptional bulls. You also have the opportunity for cape bushbuck and nyala in the same type of terrain and in the same type of hunting style.

My eastern cape kudu went 51. The bushbuck and nyala are exceptional as well.

I like stalking, getting off the beaten track and really picking over animals.

This is what he said…. I had to go back and look. I think he is getting quite good recommendations.

Op did like the post of mine that you are questioning. so he agreed and DM’s confirm that. He wants some nice scenic terrain to hunt in above all.

As you can see, in my first comment, I also mentioned/recommend Bots, Where you have obviously had some success, great bulls you shared. I was not questioning or referring to you recommending Botswana.

Really appreciate all of the recommendations. dchum is right that I was thinking more hilly terrain, but Botswana looks really interesting. I think the only conclusion I can draw from all of the recommendations - is that there is really some stunning options for going for Kudu, in any of the three. As I will probably do east cape in 28, I think I'll take the opportunity to see what Namibia is like. I'll probably have to do Botswana at some point as well - you know, to test which one I prefer ;).

How lucky are we all to get to hunt kudu in Africa. Like you said, blessed with to many good options :sneaky:

@kpoynter knows kudu, believe that.
@CloudySkies check out Kevin’s last hunt report. He just killed an amazing 60”+ bull in freaking Tanzania.

The places to hunt are endless. The golden age is now!

The Eastern Cape is absolutely beautiful and in terms of beautiful country, scenic areas, glassing etc…
Damn hard to argue with. I killed my first Kudu on my first day of my first safari there lol…
Been hooked ever since.
Personally I would for sure do this over Limpopo (although many like Limpopo area…I didn’t like it as much)
The only thing I would tell you is the Eastern Cape kudu is a slightly smaller critter and a 50” one is good. I’ve killed a couple there.
The hills are absolutely beautiful and you can glass and stalk the ridges so it sounds like that may be a fit for you
But…for kudu in terms of highest quality and quantity (and even price)….Botswana…
I’ve seen 40-50 bulls in an afternoon there (free range too btw)

Since you have plans to return to South Africa with your wife in 2028, my suggestion would be to consider a country outside of South Africa.

If Kudu was my priority and focus Botswana would be my #1 choice and I'd select a free range hunt with Tholo Safaris. Namibia would also be on that list for a chance at a free range kudu and eland. Just be aware, once you get outside of South Africa and experience some free range areas, your 2028 plans might change. You should also consider going to Tholo Safaris in 2028 with your wife. It's in very close proximity to Chobe NP which will give a similar experience as Kruger, plus allow for a tour of Vic Falls and some shopping/dinning for the wife instead of just hunting.
 
Kudu…….

Yes! Indeed the primary focus of many of my hunts.

I got this nice beast in no-fence central Namibia this year. It’s 57” (or possibly 56" - I can't remember) and my best, to date. Next best is 54” from roughly the same area.

Waterberg Mountains in Limpopo, you can do heaps of glassing in massive mountain and canyon systems. I photographed a 60” bull (estimated) with Chris Troskie in those mountains. Those mountains are every bit as wild as the Eastern Cape in my experience.

If I were to hunt Limpopo for Kudu this is 100% the place…Chris Troskie too is well known for it and they take fantastic kudu.
You will take a bigger Kudu here for sure and if you focus you should take 55”+ with a legitimate chance at 60”

I really enjoy hunting Namibia it’s a different experience than South Africa. Much larger properties and more low fence hunting. I’d combine kudu with Hartmann zebra and gemsbok. Here’s my most recent kudu from Namibia with Jamy Traut Safaris. We spotted at base of big hill and made a stalk in. Big 60,000 acre cattle farm.

I hunted Kudu innthe Eastern cape, it was wonderful mountain hunting. Two days of miles of walking, glassing animals at 1,000 yards and stalking. I shot an ancient scared up 49 in Cape Kudu, most fun hunting i have ever done.

I hunted with Elite Hunting Outfitters in Pearston SA, great people.

Did you speak to your wife about Tanzania & a lesser kudu ? Maybe better to start small & work up to big ;)

I did try and suggest Tanzania (can you blame a guy for trying with such an awesome woman), but in the only negative response she gave me to this whole planning effort "I don't think you need to go to Tanzania".

Main consideration for me now is between what else I go for with the Kudu. I prefer to hunt the endemic species if I'm hunting in a region, hence for Namibia (which I'm leaning toward), its Gemsbok, Damara Dik-Dik and maybe a Hartmann's Zebra.
