318 WR Build - Question

Indeed, PacNor will make a barrel chambered in 318WR. Be advised though that the throat will be too short for the COAL of 3.35”. I know because this happened to me. I got Manson to build me a throater to fix the issue and PacNor happily did the work without a charge. I elected to go with a JTL of 60 thousandths and it shoots wonderfuly. The great thing about PacNor is they have an option where you can design your own barrel for a small fee. They will also copy a barrel to spec if you are replacing a barrel for an existing stock.
SkullKeeper,

Love your rifle in 318 WR and appreciate your insights and experience with the cartridge. I have been on-again/off-again on deciding to pursue my own 318 WR project. Your post has provided inspiration but some questions for you, if I may:

I have leaned toward having PacNor chamber and install the barrel. What is the cause of the short throat from them? Could it be the reamer they have on-hand?

Do they now have the necessary tooling the throating issue?

If not, is this a tool that the Manson folks could supply?

Thanks in advance and look forward to your response.

I’m happy to help where I can! Yes the reamer is the issue and Manson was able to supply a throater that they custom made. PacNor might have this short throat problem fixed but I have my doubts - I would make a phone call to check. Let me know if you need brass as I’m having some other brass shipped over from Australia shortly and it can be added to my box. Unfortunately the wait time for PacNor to make a barrel is most likely 10 months or better.

I was re-reading comments on this post, and I was wondering if you did the work/built/assembled the components for your .318WR or did you use a shop for the services?

PacNor made the barrel and attached it/head spaced it to the action. Bruce Farman did the rest of the assembly and bluing plus made the stock from a blank I sent him. He’s a master gunsmith and stocker.

Thats awesome to find this thread. Yesterday I put in an order at PacNor for a .318 barrel. I will be building on an oberndorf comercial sporter action. I have brass, dies and bullets already
That’s the exact way I approached my build - obtain the fuel first then buy the vehicle

Super cool! Are you making your own stock?

I’ve been playing around with some wood blanks. Atleast one will end up as a .318 WR. One in a British Safari style and the other as a British stalker with the rounded grip.

Beautiful looking rifle, if you don't mind me asking what did you do for the front sight? Find a second hand set for sale or did you get them machined up?

Cheers,
Pete

P.s sorry OP for the thread drift.

I found a front and rear sight off of an original Westley Richards (very lucky to have acquired it)

For those needing to source bullets, Cutting Edge made a run of their Safari Raptors for my 318. 210 grain Raptors and 235 grain solids. They are very accurate, but I have not had the chance to use them on game yet.

I had Ben Piper at Piper Rifles build me a 318WR a few years ago and he hit a home run. Built it on a commercial Mauser banner action and I got the Krieger blank, dies and a ton of bullets from a member here who cancelled his 318 project. The stock blank came from Roger Vardy and Ben did the rest, added a bolt mounted peep sight and it shoots very well.
I don't think Krieger does any 318 barrels anymore, and RCBS would probably be a better choice for dies than CH4D as I hear of many long wait times. Hopefully Woodleigh will get a run of 318 bullets over here soon. I do have a the Manson reamer I supplied to Ben to chamber my barrel if that can help anybody.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
