Not a huge fan of semi autos, I’ve had/used my fair share and just don’t give me the same feeling as a double barrel, plus there’s reliability concerns for me on semi auto shotguns.

We’re going to go to cabelas tomorrow and take a look at their CZ Teal and see if he likes it but still shopping around. I’ve not shot a side by side shotgun yet, only an over under or single barrel so I can’t compare.
 
I have a Mossberg Onyx Reserve O/U, I've run thousands of rounds through it since I bought it new in 2012. It breaks clays, kills pheasants and handles 3" magnum Turkey loads like a champ. They dont make that exact gun anymore, but they do still make Silver and Gold Reserves, essentially the guns, just different levels of fancy. Hard to beat for $720 bucks.


I've had my eyes on a Weatherby Orion SxS for a while now, but another gun (or some other gear) seems to jump the line. MSRP is $1,100, but I typically see them selling for $850-$900. This might be
a little light/snappy in 12 gauge for an inexperienced shooter, but they make them in 20 gauge as well.

I'm heading out the door so I'll make this succinct.

1) Do him a favor and don't get a SxS...get an O/U - most people just shoot them better...SxS guns are, for most folks, an acquired skill.

2) Increase your budget to $2k or a hair more and get a quality gun. If you buy a new $1k gun, it'll be worth $650 before sunset. If you buy a used $1k gun, you probably got something that someone else didn't want. A "B" gun (Browning or Beretta) will hold it's new value and keep up with inflation with the added benefit of being a better shooting gun. A new Browning O/U is seriously almost as good as money stored under the bed.

3) Make sure you get a gun on the heavy side of average - a 6 1/4lb 20 gauge is a torture on a hot, shirt-sleeve dove hunt. 7ish lbs for a 20/28 or closer to 8 lbs for a 12 gauge.

12 or 20 gauge is what I’m looking for. I shoot a Ruger Red Label and he likes it a lot but they seem to be pretty high in price right now and most likely won’t fit his budget.

Farmers fields is where I’ve done it locally, have some public land that is open fields near me but I don’t typically have much luck there. They like the grain from a cultivated field I’ve found. Near a water source is a huge plus too

Hi Noah,
If you want U/O and it's in your budget, then CZ is certainly a good choice.
Those rifles are made in Turkey and actually have nothing to do with the real CZ from the Czech Republic, but they are not of bad quality. I had a U/O Mallard 12/76 and she was ok. I sold it many years ago and the current owner is very happy. It is especially good for beginners.
In the price of 1000 USD, you can find real, top quality. The old S/S Gebruder Merkel Suhl 12/70 (East Germany DDR) are beautiful. I have one in my neighborhood and I plan to buy it. It is 50 years old, but it works as if it left the factory yesterday. If you can somehow get to her, I am happy to recommend her to you.

I would recommend increasing your budget a few hundred dollars and getting a standard Belgian Browning Superposed (or other Browning model if you so choose). They point like an extension of your arm, lock up super tight, and will outlast their owner. In my opinion this is more acceptable than skimping on a lesser shotgun that will only give you problems later (likely sooner) on down the road.

It’s not my budget, it’s my father in laws and he’s on a fixed income so can’t really increase it, also he’s too proud to take money from me or let me buy one for him. He’s not going to shoot a lot, less than 100 rounds a year he just wants something of his own to hunt with instead of borrowing… again, he’s too proud lol.

I know the type, I have one in my family too. Fair enough.
 
At the pricepoint, you will not find a more reliable and easier to repair/service shotgun than a Beretta 680 series gun.

20 gauge guns sell for more than 12s, so I'd focus on a 12. I think the going rate is $1250-$1600 used, but you get what you pay for.

You might wanna look at the Savage 555’s they’re another import from Turkey and they offer them in several different configurations from $600-1000 and all the gauges. I’ve got a 28ga and 12ga that are my loaner guns when I take people out Dove Hunting or Clay target shooting.
 
I have 3 buddies that outshoot me with Yildez(spelling?) Beautiful, Turkish made shotguns. Sub $1000.
 
Thats where the CZs will be made as well. Tough to get a new O/U sub $1k that is not made in Turkey. In fact, I so not know of one.
