Want To Buy Double Barrel Shotgun For Dove Season (under $1,000)

Looking for a double barrel shotgun could either be S/S or O/U for my Father in Law for the upcoming dove season. He’s never really shot shotguns before except mine a few times messing around but wants something to hunt with of his own instead of using one of mine. I have a dove hunt booked for me and him through @gizmo for this coming September, which will be his first time shooting at actual birds

I know $1k isn’t a very high budget in the world of shotguns but just seeing what’s available, a larger emphasis would be on an either an English double, a shotgun with engraving or a shotgun with color case hardening, but I know it’s a longer shot.

12 or 20 gauge is what I’m looking for. I shoot a Ruger Red Label and he likes it a lot but they seem to be pretty high in price right now and most likely won’t fit his budget.

I’ve got a CZ All Terrain that I am really fond of. It was about $700 I believe. I got it in 20g and couldn’t be happier.

CZ bobwhite is the only way to go for a side by side for less than $1,000. I have had mine for 19 years and put thousands of rounds through her by now and she still closes like a bank vault. Their side by sides are on the proper frame for each gauge. My 20ga comes in at 6lbs even and is a joy to carry and shoot.

Aside from my British guns that are all significantly more than you budget, my favorite SxS’s are the old Stevens 311’s. You can typically find these for a couple hundred dollars. The 12ga I shoot belonged to my great grandfather and 4 generations have been killing stuff with it.

How much felt difference is say a 28 vs a 20 frame feel in hand?

I do not have a 28 in it, but the 28 gauge is about a half pound lighter than the 20. They make or made a model that had a single trigger, but to me on a side by side you have to have double triggers. Just looks weird without them. With a little practice it'll become second nature to use them. I love that I have two different choke tubes and can instantly select which barrel I shoot. This lets you use the barrels with a tighter choke to take a shot that is further away without "wasting" a shot first.

I like the CZ Teal for the money. Have shot them in 20 & 28, both were light, quick/smooth pointing and felt great for dove and quail wingshooting. Extractor instead of ejector is a bit of a negative for speed reloading, but not really a major issue.

Amongst currently manufactured side by side shotguns, the CZ Bobwhite G2 is your best option.

Nothing wrong with a Stoeger Uplander. You can get them for around $500

The CZ Teal would be great if there is a BPS or Cabela's near you.

Otherwise, I would go with a CZ Bobwhite S/S.


With an adult man, I would always opt for a 12 gauge, because there are so many shell options compared to anything else. Nothing is hard to find in a 12 gauge.

I like to go to the antique guns section on gunbroker. Old pretty shotguns are remarkably cheap if they aren't one of the main few brands people look for. I got this Baker for around $330 shipped a few years ago. You do have to be more careful about sticking with low pressure loads in damascus barreled guns though.

I just saw a CZ Canvasback O/U in the classifieds here for like 600$. Thats a great deal on a pretty good entry level shotgun.

When potentially shooting multiple boxes of shells when hunting doves, buy a semi automatic 12 or 20 ga. His shoulder will thank you for it. For the price point, a Stoeger M3000 or M3020 are hard to beat.
