What four calibres would you choose

If limited to 4 including rimfire, here are my choices from among the rifles I own.

.22LR
.257 Roberts (or AI)
.280 AI
.375 H&H

If rimfire is excluded, then my choices, again from what I own, would be:

.257 Roberts (deer or coyote sized varmints)
.280 AI (deer, plains game, and elk)
.308 Norma Mag (bigger game)
.375 H&H (dangerous game including bears and Cape buffalo)

I know both the .257 Roberts and .308 Norma Mag are odd choices but I own them plus have plenty of brass. I don't own a .300 Win Mag so my magnum is the somewhat older .308 Norma Mag.
@jpr9954
Love your choices of the Roberts and the Norma.
Two great cartridges that are very versatile but under appreciated.

I know I should respect my elders but I think I've figured out why you don't like the 243 wonder weapon
You can't handle the huge amount of recoil and muzzle blast.lol
I'll buy you a muzzle brake so you can finally enjoy the woders of the beast
@rob7mm08
Good to see you have a sense of humour.
The 243 already makes enough noise in a 20" tube so don't need a brake.
The 243 is all noise and no go in my book.
I bit like taking the muffler off a lawn mower. Noisy as shit but not much use unless you want to annoy someone.

Not sure but used to count as one, though can't be a straight pull action

If it's still the case then a shame mauser stopped making the mo3 .....only one of the switch calibre rifles I liked....never had the spare cash to get one though...used to make up a calibre list though when was daydreaming though :E Big Grin:....and even though as you probably know I can't stand blaser rifles that is ridiculous about straight pull rifles....

As it's 4 in total I haven't a clue..but as you in oz and a handgun wouldn't figure anyway....Will give it a go.....and as you are in oz and presumably looking at majority use there, with occasional trip to an African country.....and not 100% on what you hunt there in oz I will have a go with some of the calibres I have...

.22lr...or maybe a .22 hornet instead

After my 2 hunts in zambia and I got involved in the country, and started spending more time here I got my national registration card which meant I could get a firearms license....I was told I could bring in 4 firearms I already owned....not sure if the guy who told me was correct but what i brought in were
Glock 19
Remington 870
Heym 9.3x62
Ruger m77 in 458 lott..

Then when started spending more time here bought occasionally odd other one...then when started living here a few more.....so at moment not too bad here...but they are reviewing the firearms laws at the moment...one of the things is putting up licence and renewal fees by massive amounts...which I honestly couldn't justify paying ...so that might curtail a few for me if it is implemented....also making it harder to get a licence...but let's wait and see.....our biggest bugbear is ammo amounts...only 150 rounds a year per rifle...and 50 rounds in possession at one time....22 can have 200 rounds a year...handguns 50 rounds a year per handgun...shotguns think its 250 a year per shotgun....so handy having more than one handgun in same cal and same with shotgun....back where I come from I can have thousands of rounds and only range shooting...here I have thousands of acres to shoot on just messing around, but don't have the ammunition to be able to shoot to do it....so swings and roundabouts....but am not complaining as at least can still have a selection of firearms..just can't play with them as much.....but is an excuse to buy others just to get the ammunition allocation :X3: :E Big Grin:

Hmmmm a bit like a noisy neighbour especially one that likes large bore thunder pipes

Yeah I agree, I was considering the Sako 100 if I ever win big
Or even a single barrel switch barrel system

If you wanted a rimfire I'd go 17hmr or 17wsm.
I used to have the second one and it was deadly at over 200 yards

I'm from the great state of NSW Australia and in their wisdom the government of said state wants to limit the average licenced shooter to a limit of four calibres.
I'm not entirely sure if that includes rimfire and shotguns, for this exercise we will only limit to centre fire.
My four calibres are

22 250
30 06
9.3x62
404j

Should cover anything I want to hurt anywhere in Australia and overseas

Let the fun begin

Rob
Since we aren't counting RF or shotguns, I would have to go with .22-250, 7-08, .300 Win Mag, and .458 Win Mag.

This exercise was difficult. I had to.leave out my .30-06 and 7mm Rem. It's like asking a father of six to name his four favorite children!

I'd keep the 30 06 and get rid of the 300 win, I don't think I'd get enough Xtra with the 300 mag.
I know it's better especially with heavy projectiles, just not enough for me to to get thumped by the Xtra recoil.
If I was going to soak up more recoil I'd go with a 338 of some sort or even a 375 H&H

In Australia the ought six is fine. Can't see much need for the 300.
Instead of the 338 or 375 I went with the Whelen.
Equals the 338 and not far behind the 375 when loaded properly.
I get 2,900 fps with 225s and 2,455fps with 310s in my Whelen. And it leaves your hat in your head when you pull the trigger.

I'd load the 06 up with a good 180 or 200 and off to Africa I go for plains game.
I know people are going to say it's marginal for eland yet the 300 is fine.
Yes if you are going to shoot beyond 300 definitely but 250 to 300 is my limit and if I don't think I can place my shot in the right spot I don't take it.ive passed up a couple of big Reds and a better than average wapiti because I wasn't happy with my shot that was on offer

I did consider the 35 whelen but don't really get much more than owning a 243 beast Slayer lol

Have read all the thread and figured to throw in with everyone else

US Metric World Double
22 Hornet 5.6x36R 22 hornet 8x57JRS
30/06 7x64 300 H&H 9.3x74
338WM 9.3x62 375 H&H or 9.3x62 500 NE
375 H&H 12.7x70 Schuler 505 Gibbs 577NE

Formatting on mine went hay wire.

US 22 hornet 30/06 338WM 375H&H

Metric 5.6x36 R 7x64 9.3x62 12.7x70 Schluer

World 22 hornet 300 H&H 375 H&H or 9.3x62 505 Gibbs

While I have killed many blacktail deer and some plains game with .my .30-06, I have noticed more dramatic results with the .300.and 200 grain bullets. The difference in recoil doesn't bother me. Anyway, with the 7-08 and the .300 I just don't use the '06 much anymore. I use the 7mm Rem Mag the most for deer, pronghorns and such, but if I can only have four rifles I'd go with the ones I listed.

See you are from Denmark - see quite a few Danes where I stalk in Scotland - great hunters.
The Harkilia stuff works well in Africa - I have a bit for use here in UK.
I am again looking for 600 Nitro dies preferably RCBS 1 inch. The set I purchased previously are 1 1/2 inch and do not fit my die. Another member has graciously taken them off my hands. If anyone happens to have a set of 600 Nitro Dies that will fit my Rockchucker Supreme RCBS press, please shoot me a message and thanks in advance for any assistance you may have to offer!
I have not posted any items for sale on this forum and will not every put anything for sale. My account was hacked and I've worked with the admin to get things shut down.
