In 1953 George and Joy Adamson drove their Land Rover from Nairobi to Dover, England - a 4 1/2 month trip!

I had a 67 Cruiser and ran the hell out of it stock then rebuilt it. 454 Chevy, Hurst 4 on the floor, 12x16.5 rubber, load leveler shocks wih extra long reach, Warn 5k winch. Unstoppable offroad.

Living and traveling in southern Africa we encounter terrible roads frequently. Wouldn’t want to be broken down or stuck on any of them. The reliability and off-road capability of my Land Cruiser is outstanding.

I have a 1948 Land Rover & a 1953 Land Rover both are series 1 plus I have a 2007 V8 LC79 Land Cruiser.
All 3 I would say can traverse the same level of difficulty country. The Land Cruiser is far more comfortable and will carry more than 1 tonne.
My earliest memory was when I was about 4 yrs old and Dad would set the throttle on the 1948 Land Rover and get me to steer while he through out the hay. I stood on the seat and steered it like a ship.
I later learnt to drive when I was 12 in the paddock in the 1953 Land Rover with its crash box in 1st & 2nd. Fond memories.

Besides a tractor, I too learned how to drive in my Father's 1967 Land Cruiser thought I was pretty slick when I mastered "Double Clutching" from 2nd to 1st

Great discussion, I really enjoyed this thread. I can't add to the Cruiser/Rover debate. But when I was young, our neighbor had an old Nissan Patrol that was incredible. I almost bought an FJ in 2012 but ergonomically it didn't fit me at all, once the front seat was back, there was no room in the back seat and it had a horrible blind spot from the pillar.

I miss my 79 Bronco though!

I’ve had a series 1 Land Rover (owned a half share it it) and a 1963 FJ40 (wish I still had it) and currently own a HZ75 and a vdj76 V8 diesel wagon landcruisers. The land rover’s engine threw a leg out of bed about a week after I sold my share to the other owner

The Ute needs a good going over , she’s got over 500,000 kms on it, and she’s not had a gentle life

My 2023 Defender 90 next to a Series 1. Have had zero issues with D90 since I purchased. Coil springs and 4 cylinder engine. Extremely comfortable, refined, and goes off road wherever I take it.

I would hazard a guess that any Toyota will outlast any Land Rover -- regardless of model choice. I have a ton of buddies that have Land Rovers and they are beautiful cars. Not a single one of them is trouble-free. Get to 60,000 miles and tighten up your chinstrap because shit is about to go wrong. Beautiful yes, reliable or value-conscious, absolutely not.

But then there are alot of things in our life that way!

P.S. I drive a 2021 Yukon XL AT4 and it is a workhorse. I have torn off bumpers, ripped up the skid plate, blown a quarter panel off going through trees (whoops) and it keeps going. When duck hunting with 2 dogs and 2 or 3 guys, nothing smaller works.
I'm with you on that. I have a 2004 Suburban Z71 that has gone up, down and through the Virginia and North Carolina mountains in all seasons with no problems.

If we could buy those diesel 5 speed Land Cruisers with manual locking hubs in the states then I’d buy 3.
Instead it’s cheaper to buy full size 1 ton dodge Cummins truck in a 5 speed and convert the front axle to manual hubs and eliminate that vacuum 4x4 and hub assembly wheel bearing in the states at this point so I have 3 of those.
Would prefer the land cruisers
I remember as a kid when those Toyotas in the states with round headlights and solid front axles were the norm, now they are unheard of.

If that’s possible that would be great, the last time we tried to bring over mahindras we couldn’t get them inspected, of course we just went away with inspections all together this year so maybe it’s different now

Oh, it’s possible. I’ve personally looked them over and asked him to look out for Toyota’s. He occasionally brings in Land Cruisers.

I just joined the FJ cruiser club. I traded into a nice overland rig.

I rode in a few Land Rovers as a kid and had great memories of being in the bush.

It had a lot to do with Land Cruiser Utes in employment driving them daily and at bushfires.

Land rovers are admired by collectors and enthusiasts in Australia.

Land cruisers are used by the mining industry, government agencies and most sizeable rural properties.

Are you kidding???
There is no comparison that is not laughable….
Toyota makes the best (best being defined as “if a horde of Islamic lunatics are chasing me and shooting at me, what would I want to be driving?) vehicles on the planet.

Ask every real PH what he would buy with his own money, ask every PH’s wife what she wants her husband driving, and you will get the same answer - LANDCRUISER!

Plus, the LANDCRUISER is easier to repair. You need two Land rover’s in Africa - one for spare parts and one to drive.

Get real….the only Africa hunting vehicle is a LANDCRUISER.

On that note terrorists even choose Toyota Landcruiser and Hilux for desert warfare.

I don’t think they are so fussy with car bombs where any sedan that make it to the target is loaded as a weapon

Hello,
I might be able to help you out depending on how many you need. I could probably spare 50-75 .285g A-Frames. They are factory pulls that look like new. Let me know if you are still looking,
Thanks,
Gary
