I too have a romantic soul. I love them both, and there ain't no better ride in the world than bouncing along in a working safari Land Cruiser somewhere on the trail in Africa.....

Here at home we decided to go with the Range Rover. I've heard it described as a Defender in a tuxedo, and that's about right so far. It's extraordinarily comfortable for long trips, and absolutely confidence-inspiring when the weather gets nasty in the mountains...... and the truth is, that's what it will see more of here in the US than any true off-road adventure. She is shockingly nimble and sure-footed for such a big heavy truck, and I also have all the latest camera gadgets so the visibility and situational awareness are phenomenal.

I'm getting 25 mpg highway, with the ability to pull out and pass with authority anytime I need it, and also the ability to deliver Momma in comfort and style to the destination of her choosing.....

I keep waiting for the famous Range Rover glitches and issues; I've heard all the stories and even enjoy telling some of the jokes myself. But to be fair, she's been steady as a rock. I guess she wasn't built on a Monday morning, LOL.

So I drive it like we're on the way to the Opera, but in my own mind, I know she's capable of WAY more if I need it. It's kind of nice to have that in reserve.

Now this is a bush truck I have come to like.. 3.5l petrol

Land Rover missed the boat when they left the high maintenance issues unresolved when Toyota first entered the market.

You must remember that every hunter, tour operator, fisherman, outdoor enthusiast all used Land Rover and Range Rover.
But they required a lot of maintenance which was not the case with Land Cruiser.

The 4x4 system that was found in a Land Rover or Range Rover was superb.
A Land Rover would more easily traverse soft/Sandy/muddy terrain than a Land Cruiser

My 1978 2dr V8 Range Rover service manual indicated an engine rebuild every 40,000miles.
That’s absurd in today’s requirement.
Not to mention the twin carbs and electrical system niggles.

If Land Rover had seen the potential that Toyota saw and improved the reliability, they would still be more widely used.

I can load more weight in my cruiser. Drive further, harder and have less worries.
A 1hz is relatively bullet proof and is the perfect remote area engine.

Land Rover unfortunately only have themselves to blame for losing the market to Toyota.
And they will never be able to get it back.

Both are incredible rigs.

Rovers do occasionally break, but I have never had a vehicle easier to work on. My 1965 series 2a 109 inch station wagon is still running fine 60 y after it left the Solihull production line.

I think a previous poster nailed it when he said that the vast majority of folks won’t tolerate a real purpose built off road vehicle. People like to say they would love to have my old rover or my equally spartan Mercedes Unimog, but after 10 min of slow, very manual driving with no radio or AC or any sort of modern comfort these trucks lose their gleam to most.

I have used both the Land Rover Defender and Land Cruiser FJ 45 and Land Cruiser 79 pickups as everyday hunting vehicles. The Land Rover is only a realistic option if you prefer fiddling with broken down vehicles to actually hunting.

I’m a cruiser guy, but I learnt to drive aged 7 in a series 2 on the farm here in Zim.

Dad had a 75 and mom an 80 growing up, both went well past 800,000kms. Moms Prado that she still has is 580,000miles and no signs of stopping.

My personal cruiser journey started at 16 when I bought a busted old 45, stripped it down and built it back up, slowly, as I was broke, but loved every minute of it.

Fast forward to today, 4 old 45s later and this is my daily driver that I have just rebuilt for the 2nd time. I can’t afford to buy one, so I build them!

. I think it’s funny how for some weird reason in the US we don’t have access the very best of what both Toyota and Land Rover have to offer for drivetrains….(diesel) probably because if they were here, I doubt anyone would ever buy an American suv again.
The outside of the US model vehicles cannot meet the US safety and emissions standards. That is straight from a lawyer who works for Toyota.

I was watching this auction a few weeks ago

I have lived on and travelled to 5 continents.

Every time I see a FJ 79 or a LR Defender/series I get an excited.

Having driven both a lot, in America I would choose a F-150/250/350 for a pickup, and a Toyota Sequoia for a wagon. Over any of them.

I have owned both but Landcruiser is my choice of equipment
Where i live in Zimbabwe the roads are horrific and the beating my cruisers take are unbeliveable
My cruisers are 5 years old i have just replaced old man emu shocks on the one that has 80000km
I take them pac hunting and believe you me they see some serious off roading at night not for the faint of heart!
But there is a time and place for both Vechicles depending on the terrain!
As the old saying goes “landrovers turning owners to mechanics for 50 years “

We just celebrated International Land Rover Day by taking some of my mates 'girls', out for a week long trip.

All the girls are retired Army and play a key role in local ANZAC Day commemorations, pictured in this years parade led by his Ferret.

They handled the trip with grand aplomb, from the sandy tracks of Big Desert

to silo art sightseeing and general tourist duty through the Wimmera region.

My mount for the week was a Regional Force Surveillance Vehicle (RFSV), a ruggedized variant engineered for long-range, remote surveillance patrols, sporting their distinctive paint scheme, featuring 'Pilbara Brown'.

Not a single mechanical issue from any of them during the week, despite all coming up to 40 years old ... and all the drivers wishing they were coming up to 40 years old.
