Picked Up Heym Martini Express 416 Rigby

I believe his shop was in Cranbrook BC? Many years ago I spent the night in Cranbrook on my way to Kimberley for a mountain goat hunt. I would have loved to have visited his shop.
Ralf had been in Cranbrook for many years, but a few years before he moved to Hamburg, he had lived and worked in Creston. He made a wonderful rifle for me, and had to re-stock it when an airline broke it in half!

I join the cheering group!

Congrats!

Congrats - first rifle I’ve seen that had me immediately reaching for my credit card - too slow!

Thanks! I immediately recognized it as a Heym Martini Express having drooled after one before, probably a 10 second twilight zone moment, is this real? Then saw that the seller was reputable and then a race to buy, probably another 20 seconds!

Post above didn’t work

Received the Leupold 6HD 1-6x24 30mm Firedot from EuroOptic and Talley QD rings direct from Talley, both shipped and arrived quick! Mounted the scope, bore sighted it and will get her sighted in the next day or two. Shouldering the rifle it aligns perfectly. Perfect setup for DG!

Yes, absolutely.

On the other hand, I would call it a fantastic one-rifle for everything in Africa. Oh, you won’t be launching rounds at kudu 400 m+ across a valley in the East Cape, but who cares?

Can’t say why, but to my eye, that’s my favorite of all the wonderful wood and steel bolt action DG rifles I’ve seen. Had the right LOP for me too - 14.5 inches.

Now, when can we expect the first range report and when is its first field trip to Africa scheduled for :)

Man, if you're not thrilled with that rifle, you are mighty hard to please....congrats

Thanks! Will definitely give a range report. At 10.8 lbs total weight, it’s slightly less than my previous CZ 416 Rigby and same as my 458 Lott but man it just seems very slim and trim when handling!

I’m booking a hunt for the Greater Kruger again, Klaserie Reserve, for buffalo and hyena for October 2026 this year. Think it’ll be perfect for one rifle Safari.

Oh I definitely am! I had previously resigned myself to just making do with my “working rifles” so I am absolutely thrilled!

Height of the Talley QD rings?
They are the Talley High QD rings for 19mm bases or rifle receiver. There is not a lot of clearance for the bolt and rear scope eyepiece or ocular bell. I’d say about the same as a CZ 550 or Brno ZKK-602 so I don’t think lower Talley rings wouldn’t work to clear the scope when cycling the bolt.

Took it out back and sighted it in at 50 yards. Beautiful day to shoot. My shooting equipment was a lawn chair and my old Stoney Point shooting bipod but it’s very stable! The target is not a 3 shot group, I just made minor adjustments after each shot to dial it in. I’ll shoot for groups later. I didn’t measure the trigger pull but it definitely feels just under 3 lbs but not a hair trigger, perfect for hunting.

That’ll do!

How many round groups are you going to shoot to fine-tune POI? I usually shoot 5, but don’t have anything bigger than a 375 yet…

I usually shoot 3 shot groups for the big bores of course 5 is a more realistic indicator of accuracy and true group size, but I’m not shooting a 308 target rifle either! Since we have 8 more months before we take it to Africa for buffalo I’ll definitely be putting some more practice rounds too but that’ll be off shooting sticks.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I sighted it in with factory Barnes 416 Rigby, 400 grain TSX, a really good buffalo bullet.

Any chance you know the height difference between High and Ex-High talley?
Here is the exact description of the 30mm Talley QD rings I ordered:

These 19mm Dovetail Scope Rings are measured at the top/ widest portion of the dovetail.

These are commonly used on old Double Square bridge rifles such as the Heym or BRNO.

This will not work If you are looking for a 19mm dovetail set up for CZ 550, or CZ 557 with the recoil lug on the rear mount

Height: .410″ in 1″; .500″ in 30mm.

When I received the rings they were marked with an “H” so mine are .500”

Both of the rings I received are interchangeable, there is no front or rear. I have also read two Talley front rings for a CZ 550 will work as well.

Wow, this turned into a perfect DG setup wit the scope. Odd question, can you tell me the outside diameter of the ocular tube on the riflescope (to clarify that is the eye-end of the scope? How do you like the scope overall? I am thinking about getting one myself..
