Flying comfort plus?

My first trip to South Africa 3 years ago was an amazing adventure and I’m already planning my next big trip! Unfortunately the seating accommodations from Texas to SA weren’t exactly comfortable. I’m 6’3” 230lbs I’ve had 3 lumber surgeries including a 3 level fusion. Needless to say, the back pain during my last safari too away from the adventure itself. This next trip, im looking to upgrade my seat to comfort plus on Delta. I’ve never flown comfort plus, and my question is; are the seats considerably more comfortable and reclining?
The inability to recline my seat is what killed my back last trip. Unfortunately, upgrading to 5K -10K seating isn’t in my budget, but comfort plus seating is.

Premium Select is the next level and it reclines a bit more and has more leg room.

My daughter and I flew this a couple years ago and it was okay. Certainly better than economy, but not b-class by any means. But it is priced better, especially when I was paying for two tickets.

If you are flying Delta and do not want to spend the cost of international business, then Premium sect is a pretty good alternative.
 
I have flown Delta Comfort Plus and Premium Select. I am 6ft, about 325lbs. Premium was not good on me and worth extra cost on last trip. Yes it reclines more, but tray table and controls or in arm rest, not good on larger person for me personally. Comfort Plus was and has been more comfortable for me and thats what I am booked for this year. None of the seats are really that great for the 15 hour flight other than Delta One but thats way out of my budget.
 
Consider looking at a Delta-linked credit card that gives you miles with purchases. Use it as a debit card and pay the purchases every pay period. Self discipline has to be exercised so you don't get into debt! Use it strictly to accrue free miles. Then, purchase your upgrade with your miles. I did that with United Airlines because they offered 10,000 miles for signing up for their credit card. I used the card in the same exact manner I just described, and I got the flight for my hunting trip to Spain for free, just with my miles. I also used my miles to significantly offset my upgrade to Africa. Just don't go int debt with it.

Good idea. I’ve got an Alaska airline CC for that exact same reason.
 
Another vote for premium select or premium economy depending on who you fly. I’m about your same size and weight and I fly comfort plus all of the time on auto upgrades but use premium select when flying internationally for the extra seat and leg space as well as they do recline further without encroaching on others flyers space allowing to get a little better nights sleep. I did one trip on Qatar thru Doha and while it makes the trip longer I think the layover time in Doha allowing for time in the lounge, getting a shower and being able to move around for a while mid trip actually made the whole trip travel more comfortable. May be a good option for you with back issues to have that break to move around, and if you watch you can get their business seating for about the same price as Delta’s premium select
 
For about the price of Premium Select on Delta for a few dollars more and sometime the same, you can fly business on Qatar. If you're not in Dallas or Houston, take Southwest to Hobby or Love and Uber to IAH or DFW unless you can get a cheap flight to IAH or DFW from your hometown.

Delta + is just a few more inches of leg room, while Select gives you more leg room and better recline.
 
If you can get the bulkhead seating (front row) you get lots of leg room and no one will recline into your lap. I am a big guy and in a budget and comfort plus bulkhead has been a lifesaver for me-

I did the "enhanced economy" or "comfort plus" with United to RSA from Newark, and back. At the time, the price difference was comical. It was like $600 or so more over regular economy. It was worth every penny. I'd pay even $1000 more.

At the time, our round trip economy plus was $2,400 if i recall correctly. Polaris was like $10,000. I couldn't justify paying $7,600 more.
 
Spend as much as you can afford for the upgrades. The fact that you've had a level 3 fusion and you're still going over there blows my mind. I'm 3 months into recovery from a bad L4-L5 ruptured disk microdiscectomy and I figure I may have a couple safaris left, the plane ride was low on the list of my concerns, I always fly comfort plus, if my wife doesn't go with me anymore I may upgrade to 1st class from here on out to be able to lay back. Anyway, riding in the back of the land cruiser seated is what kills my back,...I'm going to have to spend most of the time standing from point a-b from here on out.
 
Something I'd consider if you are traveling with another hunter - buy a third seat in the rows of three. I'm 6'4 ~280lb. I need shoulder width more than anything - the seat itself usually isn't terrible, and comfort leg room isn't as valuable to me. So on my trip my brother and I had a row of three seats with a purchased empty middle seat. Very happy with how that went and a HUGE increase in comfort!

My wife has had two level 3 fusion surgeries, and when we travel it’s always in 1st class
But it’s always very expensive, when traveling alone or in a group I don’t think it’s worth the extra cost to upgrade, but that’s just me and my hunting buddies opinion's

Mark were you in an exit row? My Premium Eco last April was not exit row and the table was in front of me

Seats can be very different depending on what actual airplane you're on even in the same carrier. There are some lemon seats on every airline.

SeatGuru used to be the best place to check seat layout, dimensions, and even look at pictures of what the seats look like. But it is no longer operating.

AeroLopa and Seatmaps.com are the best to look at these days. Although neither is as good as SeatGuru was.

Not exit row. This was in 2024
All the Premium seats on both flights tray tables were in armrests.
Comfort plus tray tables on seat in front of you.
 
I would do it but my wife insists on business or first class, so I am obliged to do that... Poor, poor , pitiful me....

Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!
