Well as if I haven't had enough load development projects over the last couple of years, I've added two more. This past spring I added two more rifles to my arsenal. I'm still working one of those and will share more about this later.

The other rifle I added was a Ruger No.1, one of the Craig Boddington series of No.1's. It is the "Kudu" model which is calibered in .300H&H. I had a chance a couple of years ago to shoot a No.1 in .300H&H and loved it. But I wanted the CB version, and I finally found one NIB. Price wasn't that great, but I wanted it.

I finally had chance last week to shoot some first loads. My first go around was with 180gr Nosler Partitions. The loads shot well, not spectacular but good. With the max loading giving right at a one inch group. Good enough for a leopard load which I hope to use this rifle on some day.

This past weekend I decided to give some 168gr TTSX's a go. As much as I keep trying to get away from the TSX/TTSX's, I keep trying to get them to shoot well. While I have found accurate loads in various calibers for the Barnes', what I've consistently run into is that they copper foul my barrels so quickly the groups will quickly go away. I'm certain that the tolerances of these barrels comes into play, but what can you do? Reem the barrels a little wider to make them work with the bullets...I think not.

So I loaded up H4831SC behind these at 69, 70, 71, 71.5, 72 and 72.5 grains. Bullets seated to 3.515" per the Barnes manual, well short of 3.6" SAAMI max. The 69gr load gave a 2" group, the 70gr about 1.25" group and every load thereafter was at 1" or better. The max load had two touching and the third had about one bullet diameter of paper between it's edge and the edge of the other two, nice group.

For first time out, I was impressed. I haven't even played with the seating depths yet. What also encourages me is that typically here in AZ when the temps hit 90 or higher, accuracy goes down. With the exception of my son's .308, all of the rifles I shoot open up a bit in the heat. It was 90 by 7:30am this past Sunday when I got to the range.

What makes me feel best about this is that after 18 rounds, the copper fouling from what I can see at the muzzle is no more than with any other bullet I shoot. What I normally see with these in other rifles is bright shiny copper like a new penny in the rifling.

So we'll see how this goes. I hope to use this rifle the next time I hunt with HartzView in the Kalahari. With an expected 3000+ fps muzzle velocity, it'll be nice and flat for those longer shots there, but should be good medicine for a Gemsbok.

Don't you love it when the planets a-line and all is good with the world. Well done. Envy +++

Phil, nice rifle in a great caliber! My brother used my 300 in Namibia, a Remington Classic. That rifle loved Reloder 22 with 200gr Nosler Partitions. Might give that powder a try, I have had great success with it in any number or guns. In my oh so humble opinion, this old classic round deserves 200 gr bullets. It just seems to fit. Good luck!

Congrats, on the rifle purchase, it's a excellent caliber.

Oh she'll see some 200gr North Forks to be certain. But I have to say, H4831 is quickly becoming a favorite powder. It's burn rate would not suggest it be used with the heavy for caliber bullets, but it worked very well with my .300WM and the 200gr NF's and Accubonds. Now it's worked well in this rifle in both 180gr NP's and these TTSX's.

You have to love a versatile powder.

Nice pick-up Phil.

Should be a great hunting piece, for sure.

Boy, you're really starting to accumulate some fancy weaponry there !

Spill the beans.

In due time my friend.

Phil, H4831 is indeed meant for heavy for cal bullets. Its burn rate is slower than most charts show it to be. 200grs would be less than the heaviest bullet for .30 cal too. I love that stuff too and use it in several loads. Do try R22 in that gun.

Nice gun Phil. My #1 in 300 H&H likes IMR4350, 65 grains of it behind a 180 gr. Grand Slam the velocity averages out to 2740 fps. I know that I can make them go faster but for Africa I think that's fast enough. Several 5 shot one hole groups. Good luck with yours I love mine.

So they only made 250 "Kudu" rifles, I've seen pictures now, nice wood.

That's news to me on the H4831 burn rate, but it doesn't surprise me really. Will give the RL22 a try perhaps when powder becomes available again!

There were a total of 250 each in five calibers. 7x57, .300H&H, .375H&H, .450/400 and .450NE. Frankly I'm not sure I'd want the DG calibers and a single shot. I could've bought at the same time the 7x57 in the matching latter serial numbers. The s/n starts with CB#, where # = 1-5. But I spent enough on rifles this spring and had my trip to HartzView coming up.

I'm an unashamed fan of Colonel Boddington. His military service makes him a hero in my mind. His dedication to hunting and particularly African hunting combined with his personality and the way he talks to the ordinary guy makes him a person that has characteristics I'd like to emulate.

I'd like to think CB intended these rifles to be shot and I will do so. Taking it hunting will certainly result in marks that will hurt the value of the rifle. But I hope that whichever of my son's ends up with this, that they'll pass it along to one of theirs. No intention of selling this one.

Phil, that is very good logic. I hope you have many memories with the gun and your heirs too

Took my younger boy to the range today for a little .22 and .410 shotgun fun. Looking up in my cabinet, I realized I still had some 165gr North Forks left from loading for Austin's .308 for our hunt this year. So why not give them a go in the Ruger. Staying with H4831, this was the best group. Really starting to love this gun. Will chrono next time I shoot these.

Sorry, I guess you'll have to turn your monitor 90 degrees counter clock wise to see this properly.

Picking up my Boddington Kudu tomorrow.

I have a pile of Nosler Partitions of various weights to try in it.

I find myself hoping the classic 220 gr semi-pointed Partition will shoot well. I have 350 of them on the bench!

A 220 gr Partition starting off at around 2,700 ought to be a great all-around load for PG in RSA, no?

I love that old cartridge I dont have one of those pretty number 1s but my Remington 721 still shoots pretty darn good and the performance of that round is incredible and its still surprisingly easy on the shoulder

Phil

How is the throat on your Kudu?

Mine is short...as in I cannot even seat a Hornady Spire Point to the cannelure.

I might have to take it to get another 15 to 20 hundreths added to the freebore so I can get those bullets out a bit.
