Hi to all

As you might guess according to the thread title I haven't been to Africa yet.
My father hunted in Africa several times (while I was definately to young to join him).

I already started planning my first trip to Africa - hopefully to hunt for an old dagga boy.
Hopefully I can make it to Mozambique or Tanzania within the next two years.

The rifle (.404 Jeffery) is mostly finished - using a magnum system of Montana Rifles Inc. (which is quite an unusual system here in Austria - just to be sure: we are the ones without the kangaroos, but with the snow in the Alps ;-) )

Right now I would consider to use 400grs Barnes TSX in general for this rifle.
Including some bigger plains game like Eland, Kudu, Oryx,...

To finish my lines up:
Thanks for joining all of you and please feel free to tell me, if my plans are suitable

Regards

The plan is good!
But why wouldnt you go the standard way: first a safari or two, on plains game, then upgrade on buffalo? Hunting buffalo first, is like reading the book from backwards. :)

I keep Austria in my mind for some of the future hunts! Gams (chamois) or even marmots...

Hi mark

Thanks for your answer.

Heading for a buffalo the first time you are in Africa is quite untypical, that's right.
In fact I would like to combine both, like my father did many years ago :)

He started with an Impala for the kitchen on the first day, a warthog, managed to hunt for a Sable on the third day and ended up with a buffalo on the penultimate day. He was lucky of course...

But by now that's all a big dream...

Regards

I love Austria And have hunted ibex and boar there!
there is nothing like a first safari. AH has many resources to help you plan and good outfitters to go with on a first safari. Buffalo hunting is no joke and you will want to prepare well.
Best of luck on the safari planning.

Welcome to AH. I like your plan, it is atypical but it is your dream and you are the only one that can fill in the adventures of your life. Your 404 will be enough gun for your hunt.

Love Austria, I have hiked, biked, and skied there but never had an opportunity to hunt there. One day:)

FlowHamed18, welcome to the forum! Good for you following in your dad’s footsteps!
Best of luck in your future adventure!

Welcome to the group! In a way I envy you planning your first trip. It's like the anticipation of that first kiss from your sweetheart. LOL. The planning, shooting practice rounds and the excitement as the date draws near. I can assure you, once you've been there you'll plan how to go back. All the luck to you on that hunt.

Good luck with your plan.
Welcome to AH.

aboard and your plan is a good one. I say go for it. Tomorrow is promised to no one.

Welcome aboard FlowHamed18. I like your caliber choice. The 404 Jeffery has been doing a number on African game for well over a hundred years. Talk to your outfitter to see what he recommends for a bullet that is to be used on cape buffalo. Myself I'd prefer Swift A Frames. Do you reload or use commercial ammunition?

Welcome to AH!

Welcome. The 404 project sounds like fun. Please update us as it develops. :)

Thank you all for this warm welcome messages.

To answer the question above. I am reloading my ammo and my gunsmith as well :)

A friend of mine hunted a lion as his first african animal, so, your dream in not so unusual.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
