The federal government is implementing a travel ban on several south African countries after a new COVID-19 variant was discovered there.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced Friday that the federal government will impose five measures in an effort to limit the spread of the new variant.

Foreign nationals who have travelled through several south African countries in the past 14 days won’t be allowed into the country, he said. Those nations include South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.

All those who’ve arrived in Canada in the last 14 days will have to quarantine and get tested for the virus. They will have to stay in isolation until they receive a negative test result.

The US will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other southern African countries to try to contain a new coronavirus variant spreading there.
From Monday, only US citizens and residents will be allowed to travel from the region.
This follows a similar flight ban imposed by the EU earlier on Friday.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the new variant to be "of concern", naming it Omicron.
US officials said flights from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi will be blocked, mirroring earlier moves taken by EU Member States.

I’ll bet the farm this variant is everywhere already. Not a lot of motivation for countries and economies to investigate new variants when it results in senseless travel bans.

Not sure what you on about , as governments are investigating possible variants all the time...why this one was discovered in SA by your people....

And that didn't go well in Europe and the US, so they learned, and taking action much earlier now. With Delta they were too late. It might be unnecessary now, but it isn't too late.
