Nyala or Waterbuck

Double Rifle Newbie is correct...............save a little extra money, take them both........an african 3 way, as it were...................FWB
Totally agree with this. Waterbuck, Nyala, Kudu, Sable and Gemsbok would be a fantastic package. Then add a Blue Wildebeest!

Looking for some opinions here. If you had a choice of taking a Nyala or a Waterbuck, both at the same trophy fee, and both equal trophies for their individual species, which would you take, and why?
I would have taken both.

I like them both, and they are both on my list of animals to take. Having only one choice, I'd go with the Nyala all day long. Nyala and Kudu are my two favorite antelopes.

Nyala.....why...spiral.

Where are you hunting if I was you I would decide on the area if its prime nyala territory natural range then nyala otherwise a big waterbuck bull.
Eastern Cape

I was faced with the exact same dilemma. I must have been in an area similar to @Tbitty as I had found the same thing with the Nyala being a bit too accustomed to people. I feel the more of a "hunt" you have, the more it will mean to you. I do really like the look of a Nyala, but there's something about a Waterbuck that captures me. Especially a big old brute of one! I think you got some really good advice about seeing what the area is like an checking trophy quality. If you decide on one before you get there, but see a monster of the other, TAKE IT! They are both beautiful in their own way. Or take em both! You only live once! Let us know how it turns out!
Where are you going? And when?
Eastern Cape, first half of August.

Nyala. I took the one in my profile pic in the Eastern Cape.

If you have the opportunity to take both and do not, i have a hunch later you will regret it. Start saving!

A quick rundown on the current count as best I could sort them. 18 for Nyala, 5 for Waterbuck. So the clear winner is the Nyala. Best advice that I take to heart is to be open to either opportunity if a true champion presents himself, while in pursuit of the Nyala. There were several suggestions for taking both and that would be an easy option if it were an option, several reasons there beyond just the money. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond!

Nyala is more elegant. Waterbuck though is a solid antelope from what I saw on my first trip. Difficult choice on a first visit to Africa. I have a Nyala now and want to hunt Waterbuck on my next safari.
I am actually booked for this July for a Nyala and July 22 for a Water Buck. Also taking a Cape Buffalo on each hunt

Both. Neither will get less expensive and will never be cheaper than when you are already there.

I'd take both as long as I'm there. Gun to my head?...Nyala

Excellent Nyala are to be found in Zim, Mozambique and RSA.

Best Nyala in RSA are to be found in KZN, northern parts and Umkomaas Valley and Natal Midlands....

I would suggest keeping an open mind, you may bump into a great 27 inch Nyala, dont pass it up you may also bump into a great 28 inch Waterbuck dont pass it up......you may even change your mind when you see them as to which one you would prefer....
