Delta Update

I booked my tickets for May 22- June 4, 2021 last week with insurance was a little over $1,900.00 on Delta. That’s flying from TRI to ATL to JoBurg with return from JoBurg through Cape Town to ATL. Two buddies that will be traveling with booked their tickets a few weeks before me and got them for around $1,600. Who knows but I don’t have the warm fuzzies that we will be going then. I don’t think we will freely go until there is a vaccine, but I hope I’m wrong...

Wow that is back to what the price has been. You will be fine. Make your plans!

Amazing how reliable the aircraft engines are now. IIRC, the 67 and then the 77 were the first couple ETOPs* aircraft.

*Engines turn off, passengers swim.

I heard a report that DL 204 will start flying end of May. I can not confirm this. Does anyone have any news on this flight?

Yes it starts by the end of May to enable you to fly straight from Atl to Joberg. Didn't check the return trip.

I only see it open from June 1. I’m glad to hear things are looking better. Hope this holds!

May flights through Amsterdam no direct
This is correct. I just got a refund on my Delta flight because of going through Amsterdam and the firearms permit was going to be a nightmare We were booked for May 22 and Delta would not confirm that the flights would resume June 1.

Now booked on Emirates leaving May 21, and I will have my second Covid shot by then, also RSA went to Covid level 1 as of March 1, things are looking up!

Delta Flight 200 from ATL>Joburg is no more
Delta Flight 201 from Joburg is no more

The new Delta Flight is Delta 204.

Departs ATL 5:45PM and arrives Joburg 2:45PM next afternoon.

Departs Joburg 4:15PM and about a 2 hr. flight to Capetown. Then a 2 hr. layover for refuel and refood (don't know where deplaning is allowed or not). Departs Capetown around 8PM and arrives next morning at 6:40 AM ATL.

The smaller seat will make your butt look big, but a my old boss used to tell me when I whined, "Son, that's the way it is !"

Your airline selection is your personal choice.

I am hoping that the 2:45 arrival time will allow for more connections. In the past DL200 got there about 5:00 thus making all but the latest connecting flights impossible.
The return flight allows passengers on in CPT but not off. We plan to get on in CPT and avoid the extra 4-5 hours from JNB. This long return flight from JNB makes the other options more attractive now.

Checking Delta flights this morning shows June 1 outgoing Delta 204 still available. Fingers crossed.

Premium Select round trip priced at $2,848, btw. And only three upgrades to Delta One were available.

If heading to Zimbabwe the problem with Delta is you can't make the connection if you are coming from Victoria Falls. Have to overnight, go to Cape Town on Airlink, charter or hope BA or someone else arrives JNB earlier in the day.

Harare is no problem. Bulawayo would be tight

There seems to be plenty of seats in Business One, but I don't believe Delta offers an upgrade unless you are Diamond, if they do please let me know how.

Originally was going Delta but went with United. If they change going to Emirates but will always consider Delta. Have plenty of E-Credits and miles.

At the risk of looking like a complete idiot, I need some clarification. We were supposed to go last July and were rescheduled for a trip this July.
July 17 is the day we are supposed to fly on Delta. I have heard all kinds of reports as to whether that will happen or not. Is there anything definite at this point? I am very confused,so a simple layman’s explanation would be appreciated.

As of right now the direct delta flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg is cancelled until at least June 1. However, they are offering a KLM flight that goes through Amsterdam, if you are flying without firearms it’s probably the fastest flight.
Our group didn’t want the hassle of the permit process to try and get rifles through Amsterdam so we requested a refund from delta and booked Emirates leaving May 21.
I asked delta what the chances were that flights did not start back in June and they couldn’t answer. Our return flights were June 4 and we didn’t want that uncertainty hanging over us.

I think by middle of July, things are going to look much different and in a good way.

Thanks to TNDave and YancyW for your replies. I guess all I can do is wait and see. If anyone gets any new information, hopefully, it will show up here.

What is are the best flights when traveling with a rifle from the USA to destination Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe?

If one has to overnight in South Africa does the rifle have to cleared/temporarily imported into South Africa?
