Uh Oh, Memory loss

My cousin is going through that, she calls in Covid Brain. The other day she went to pour a cup of coffee but forgot to put the cup out. Coffee all over her counter! Hope things improve for you.
And how many times has she “lost” her cellphone and has to have somebody call it for her? That’s where my wife is at now. Maybe I should give her the combination to the gun safe? Ha! Ha! Ha!

Been there done that.

The sad thing is when you walk into a room and then forget why you went into it.
I do that and I’m 60

You aren’t alone and I’m 64. I went out into the garage about an hour ago to bring in a gallon of milk. I came back into the house without it and then I remembered and had to go back out to the garage.

Another reason I'm not getting a covid shot. My short term memory loss does not need any enhancement.
If you stay here on AH too long in one session it will definitely be enhanced! Where's your cellphone? Ha! Ha! Ha!

The same thing happens to me quite often. It's because your thinking of six different things at once and then your mind gets diverted to one of those things and it wasn't to get the milk? No big deal, you just turn around and go get the milk.

I have, on a few occasions, momentarily forgotten my laptop password. The same laptop that I use on a daily basis and a password that I type in at least 10-15 times a day! I'm only 51... 71 is going to be interesting!!

Cripes. I'm in IT security. I have more than a few passwords committed to memory. Might take me a couple seconds to remember which one I need to use, but it's muscle memory after that.

Oh. And all of my remembered passwords are 15+ characters. I use a password vault for everything else.

I'll have to provide creds to use one of my tools, get the tool open, than ask myself "WTF am I using this tool right now?"

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure if I thought about what was required to walk up the stairs I'd be falling over all the time. Taking the automatic things one does and then thinking about them never works. It's like when you were a child and one of your parents took you into a shoe shop. You'd try on the new shoes and get the instruction 'just walk normally'.....so then you have to think about walking and from absolutely nowhere the Frankenstein gene cuts in and you look like it's the first time bipedal motion has been achieved.

head shrinkers say there's something about walking through a doorway which seems to cause us to forget what we were doing.

the only plausible explanation i can think of is that in our minds, getting to the room = getting done whatever we were supposed to do/get in that room, and once the "done" checkbox is checked, it goes out of mind.

this kind of thing has been happening to me for at least a couple decades, and I'm only 52.

Welcome to the senior world. I carry my brains in my pocket on my phone. If it's not written down, no telling what will or won't happen. I'm not absent minded, I just think way ahead of what I'm doing so--what was I writing??
@Newboomer
Only problem with the phone solution mate is my phone is a dam side smarter than me and I have to try and remember in what part of the phone it is stored in.
My wife says my filing system is absolutely brilliant BUT my retrival system needs a he'll of a lot of work.

I new I forgot to do something. I need to write my safe combo down and put in a safe place. But, what if I forget where the safe place is? Ha! It could happen!
Thanks Ray!
@CoElkHunter
A mate of mine forgot his combination but could open his safe with a key. Only problem he had misplaced the key.
When I asked him if he had a spare key somewhere safe he replied with a stupid grain on his face.
You guessed it he had locked it in his safe so he wouldn't lose it.
Some people you have to wonder about.

I am no psycologist, but mind workings interest me a lot. For sure subconcious auto responses like you describe are very fragile and seem to be the first to go. Try not using your computer for a month and see how elusive that password becomes! I suffer exactly that with my internet banking codes, it's a buggar. You have to somehow committ the process to the cognitive side, associations are the easiest, like a little rhymes. Duh, we all know this, but we dont do it!
@kevin Peacoke
I have no problems with online pass words and other passwords, they are ALL THE same. I always forget so if any one asks my pass word I can simply say I forget. Works all the time but I do get some funny looks until they see it on their screen.
Bob
Not my real pass word but along similar lines

I don’t think my short term memory loss is temporary? It seems it becomes worse when I stay here on AH too long. Ha! Ha! Ha! In all seriousness though, my wife and I both had Covid in early December. I think it has truly compromised her short term memory. I have noticed my sense of taste and smell is still compromised. Hang in there though, at least we’re still alive and kicking and able to harass others here on AH!
@CoElkHunter
Your lucky she still remembers who she is married to. Problem is she still remembers your purchases.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Bob.

What did you say?? When was the last time you opened it?? I have 2. 1 is used frequently and the other not so much-that one was a challenge until i made the combos very unique rifle calibers-much easier to recall than just a bicycle lock number! (one was prev. my g/fs measurements-but she keeps changing it on me!)
