400 H&H

So exciting... the hardest thing you have in front of you is not pestering you gunsmith ... I am din the same boat as I just started a 505 gibbs project .... Hopefully when your project is all said and done the boarder will be open and we can meet and have a 400H&H day

Well darn. You guys are waking up the ghost in my vault.

I have the first set of 400 H&H Reamers for the 400 H&H that were made in the US.

Chambered a barrel, mounted on a M98. A Krieger cut rifled, .411, 27 inches long, NO. 6.

Made case forming dies, resize dies, and a bullet seat die.

Used the Oehler M43 strain gauge system in developing loads. Ran a lot of bullets down the barrel.

Made a sizing die to swage 416 cheap Hornady bullets down to .411.

Wilkins of H&H heard of my project and requested my load data, which I sent to him.

This was a long time ago, maybe around 2000, I will have to check my files to see.

Never did complete the project, may do so one day.

There is a reason why the 400 H&H pushes bullets at 416 Rem velocities but with less pressure, the Oehler 43 strain gauge data confirms this. Think about it! It is one of those head knocking moments when you analyze both cases and the light comes on!!!!

Do you recall how much less pressure? I would love to know the reason.

That's a great idea! It would be a cool road trip.

I am curious whether anyone has experience with the 400 H&H cartridge? I can only find discussions about it in a general sense but no one actually with reloading or field experience.
That sounds like a winner ! The equivalent of a .404J in a .375 action with lots of bullet options. Chuck Hawks has some interesting data on the 400 here:

I really like mine Which is a Dakota 97 with a savo low power Everything it’s been up against is devastated. Shot a moose at close range full frontal with 400 grain cup point
Solid from north fork. U would have though I used a claymore. Impressive

Been shooting mine since 2011 couple of cow elk and pigs with the Barnes 300gr TSX and success on Buff and Eland with CEB Bullets ... What powder have you been using with your NorthFork Bullets ?? I've had great success with RL15 and H4895 and 300gr Barnes and Hornady Bullets and Varget with 400gr CEB Solids and 370gr Raptors ...Finding a good load for the Northfork 400 and 360gr SP's have been somewhat elusive ??

Pierre van der Walt devotes a chapter to the .400 H&H in his book African Dangerous Game Cartridges. He lists loading data for it, also.

I got that on Kindle and I cannot read the data. It's blurry.

What data do you need/ I could look some of it up for you.

Let me know if this comes thru. Hope it helps

2402ft/sec. 49,400psi chamber pressure. 400 grain Woodleigh soft. 5127 ft/lbs.

Screens 15 feet out from the muzzle.

I will not put up the powder charge, besides, H&H has all my data and this is likely one of their loads.

There was a good article in the NRA American Rifleman about this caliber "With so many good choices available I’m not certain another cartridge in this power range is an absolute necessity, but the .400 H&H Mag. is definitely a good one, and I suppose there’s always room for one more. Offering smooth feeding and relatively mild recoil, the .400 H&H Mag. is well worth considering—especially if you’re looking for a big bore that’s a bit different."
Created by H&H in 2003 it doesn't have that nostalgia fix like the Jefferys Rigbys Westley Richards etc but reading about this cartridge I'm really impressed with its performance. Uses a necked up .375 case to .411" (is there anything this case can't do?) I'm really a .404J fan but the .400H&H magnum ticks all my boxes and does anything the .404 can do and more. Dakota Arms make the rifles iirc. bullets are available for handloading. If you decide to get one, lots of photos and reports please

Lets see I have in the safe a
300H&H
375H&H
400 H&H
All based on the same cartridge, the 465H&H is based on the 378 Weatherby case.
I guess that leaves only the 275 H&H to be put in the safe....
Other than a few .22s I have nothing smaller than a .30 cal in the safe ......
You need a bigger safe

No room for one in my safe. Is the 465 similar to the 470 NE?
Sell a rifle to Toby458 and you'll have room? Ha! But, I couldn't answer the similarities between the .465 and .470, because nobody here has ever seen an actual .465 cartridge. I question if it actually exists? Pheroze had a thread here a long time ago, "Is the .465 H and H as dead as your dinner?" You can search for that thread. But since then, nobody here has produced a single cartridge (other than a photo) despite repeated pleadings to produce ONE? It's a unicorn!

From wikipedia "The .465 H&H Magnum also known as .465 Holland & Holland Magnum, is a modern big bore firearms cartridge introduced by Holland & Holland in 2003 together with the .400 H&H Magnum. The .465 H&H Magnum is a .468 caliber, belted, rimless bottlenecked cartridge. The cartridge is a necked-up, shoulder-lowered tapered cartridge based on the .378 Weatherby Magnum case."
I'll have to get one ...big bore disease is worse than covid

I know, I've read the wikipedia info on the .465 thrice over along with the unicorn legend. SHOW ME A .465 H and H CARTRIDGE! My wet dream is to have one built on a P14 action? But, until one can find REASONABLY PRICED brass and dies, it's just a soggy dream. Maybe the .400 H and H should be an alternative goal?

Well the two cartridges by H&H came out at the same time. Reasonably is the key word here and I don't know where you can get the gear unless someone is willing to share costs which would be the way I'd go or just steal stuff from a mate which we do from time to time. Obscure is expensive but think of the bragging rights: "Oh you've got a .400 H&H? well I've got the .465 H&H suck on that!"
