new cartridge

Let us move on from the discussion about .243 being better than a .25 or .35 before good Bob goes loony and ends up on walk about in the bush for a few weeks.

How about a new cartridge to ponder for it's initial cool and then sweet ascendance into glory: .300 AAC Blackout aka JD Jones' .300 Whisper. What a cartridge you have there making claims of apples to oranges!

"It holds energy down range better than a .223/5.56." It better. The bullet weighs two to three times as much.

"It's better in subsonic than a .223/5.56." Of course. The bullet weighs more.

Somebody tell me more about this thing. I have recently ventured too close to this rabbit hole and fallen in.

@Forrest Halley.
I have witnessed that cartridge in use out bush. I won't defame the rifle as the brand is usually very accurate. This particular rifle would group any better than 3 inches at 100 yards and with subsonic ammo you could throw a rock flatter with lighter projectiles it still grouped the same bat seemed better. With the projectiles used I doubt they would expand much. We didn't shoot any game with it but based on what we saw we didn't really want to. He sold it off after we got home because he didn't like it.

Hey I might be wrong but at least it's been around a while. To me it's about the same as the 30 carbine and 32/20 a great fun round but not much practical application for me.

I've been looking at the 300AAC as well, but I don't own an AR.
I know you don't need an AR to own a 300AAC, but that's how most consume it.

The beauty of the 300AAC is it fits into a 5.56x45 length chamber.
Basically a 5.56x45 necked up to .30 caliber.
Several uses depending on bullet weight and speed.
I found this video on it and really like this guys videos.
Worth a watch if you are considering the 300AAC.

that is the point bob.
however we continue to accept their corruption and excesses that they feel are their right, and watch the sexual antics going on in parliament house that nothing is done about and we turn around and re elect them so they can continue on in privelidge.
and we accept their lies again and again.
and have you ever noticed how neither party argues against another when a wage rise is mooted for them.
so we end up with crap politicians, crap rifles, and crap cartridges, in the fairyland hope that life will be easier for us.
bruce.
Lot of truth in that but oh so a depressing.

Basically it does the same thing a 30-30 Winchester has been doing for over 100 years. Another pig wearing lipstick. Just because it fits in an AR doesn't make it a good or even useful cartridge.My but Iam getting cynical.

Because it fits in an AR means a lot. That means it will fit in most small bolt actions. The 1-7 twist barrel Will let you fire nearly any weight of bullet. The recoil is low. It doesn’t feel like you are shooting a 30-30. IMO it’s a wonderful cartridge for a kids gun.
My buddy is about to load some 110 grain Barnes for his. I am anxious to see how they shoot.

I was attracted to it because it seems like a more practical use for 5.56 brass over the long run especially if I intend to suppress it. I hear the folks talking about the accuracy and I admit that I am not going for bug hole groups. I like the application for possible deer hunting and something that hits harder than a .22. The kids gun will require a small magazine like 5 or ten rounds. I want them to focus on being precise and deliberate with their application of deadly force and also not to have too many rounds at their disposal should an issue occur.

Right now I have only two calibers below .375 in centerfire. .223 for social work and .308 for anything else. I do have a .300 RUM in the works but that will not be ready for a year or more, I have the action built for it but have not pulled the trigger to get it sent to the gunsmith.

Not really interested in various rat calibers as I have no practical need at the moment. Now, if a friend of mine whose .220 Swift I borrow for prairie dogs moves I might have to visit various 6+ mm cartridges.

The 300 BLK is about like a 30-30, within 150 yards I would definitely hunt deer with one. My buddy has one in a Ruger American. I like it a lot, and I think it’s a lot better “first” deer rifle than a 243.
@Wyatt Smith
A sling shot or a bow and arrow is better than that last one you mentioned.

Barnes love velocity so be careful of your expansion parameters and use it only as long as it maintains 2,000 fps for reliable expansion.

You can make anything look good on paper with a lot of rhetoric but that doesn't make it good.

I have a beautiful M17 35 Whelen AI but I prefer the straight Whelen because I don't have to fireform and play around. Both good cartridges tho. If'n you lived in OZ I might have been able to sell you the AI.

The 35 Whelen AI
That is a good looking AI Bob if I lived in O I might have bought it. We both think alike as my light caliber of choice is the savage 250-3000 in a Ruger 77 RSI. My grandson is now learning "the way". Another year or 2 and I will introduce him to the 35 caliber realm. Gotta keep the lineage intact into the future. I hope your shoulder is coming along well for you Bob.

Get your grandson a nice youth model savage or Ruger in 358 Winchester and load it with pistol bullets and build up to full power loads. Only one problem is grandad will never get to borrow it as he will love it that much. A nice little 2 to 7 scope and he's set.
