Delta Airlines Issue

This is the third report, in a very short time, of an AH member encountering Airline Staff Stupidity (ASS) regarding firearms.

Time to start carrying paper copies of:
1. the IATA POLICIES related to firearms and ammunition.
2. Airline stated firearms/ammunition policy posted on the web.

Demand to see a Manager.
Exactly! I was at Delta counter helping a friend in ATL and the ASS said we had to have our Namibia gun permit done a month in advance! I said NO WE DO OT AS A MATTER OF FACT! She got on phone and corrected it. We had quite a few problems last month and I am beginning to agree with your thought here.

D
Well it's less than 30 days since 3 of us flew in and out of Johannesburg . I had 2 rifles and both my buddies had 3. No problems.
Ditto I was just there as well

I am so sorry this happened to you on your first Safari. I would have been so mad might have been thrown off the plane!

In some ways I’m lucky in the fact that in my local airport I’m well known. I have over the last 10 years educated the airline personal. The worst is the TSA in Canada is ran by the lowest bidder, and we depend on these people for our safety. They are low paid and the minimum of training.

TSA in Calgary jimmied open an Americase takedown shotgun case for me after it had already been checked through by them. Idiots ruined the locks. The case showed up taped shut with no functional locks. Idiots!!!!

Americase gave me new locks for free.

Personally, I hesitate to use a case with integral locks after that experience. At least they don’t ruin the case if they cut the padlocks off.

On my last flight when I took a rifle and case I went with the ticket agent to the TSA inspection area where they asked me to unlock the padlock which I did.

They then did the inspection and asked me inside the room to relock the case. I started to lock it back up when the TSA lady started to laugh and asked me just how I was going to relock it when the lock was sitting inside of the case. I told her that she didn't look at the case very well or she would of seen the note inside that asked them to use the spare lock incase they had to cut my other padlock off. I had left a unlocked padlock inside the case with the note as a just in case and the other lock was destroyed.

Must have been that Asian woman that freaked when she X-rayed my case and saw a handgun in it. She started screaming at the top of her voice “you have a handgun in there, you can’t have a handgun, you can’t own a handgun”. I told her to phone her supervisor and put it on speaker, she did and told him that I had a handgun in my gun case, his answer is the case locked, to which she answered yes. His reply was what’s the problem.

Just checked in to fly from Atlanta to Johannesburg on Delta and they are saying I can only have 1 gun per locked case. I was shocked. Had to call my wife to come get one of my rifles. Very Frustrating. Is there a new policy I haven’t heard about? Will this be a problem since I have 2 guns on all my paperwork? This is my first trip to Africa.

Were you with J-J Matt with the TBH crew by chance? There's another report of the same issue out of Oklahoma on a different bowhunting forum. Possibly a specific Oklahoma airport issue !!!

No, I was on a trip with my son. I’ve since heard from two others that had the same problem with Delta at Will Rogers OKC Airport.

I have flown out of will rogers connecting on all of my overseas flights. Just came through there a minute ago. I have never had any issues checking a gun through there, in fact most have been polite and helpful. But I am certain that it only takes one idiot to screw things up. Sorry that happened to you.

I fly out of there quite a bit as well and have never had any problems traveling with firearms. The problem here is the Delta Supervisor, Christy. She is adamant that she is right, but refuses to show anything in writing to back up her stance. I’m sure I won’t be the last to be negatively impacted by her. I reached out to SCI-OK and DSC-OK to let them know about this issue.

Sounds like a Delta problem. I've flown in and out of Reno and New York on United, American and Jet Blue and have never had any trouble then SAA to JNB and Pt. Elizabeth. Only once in Reno did they open my case to check my guns. Other times they Xray the case and wish me a good flight. At JFK they run me through the wringer with cops and TSA but that's just SOP with them for anyone with guns.

We just checked in in Atlanta for DL 200 to JoBurg. 2 rifles in one case, a third rifle in a second case. We had no issues at all. We are right at 11# of ammo but they did not check that. Hunting RSA, Zim and Namibia. Back in a month.

Travel well brother. Send up a flare if you need @Bullthrower338 to come pull you from the jaws of a croc!

She should be fired immediately for her immature actions. People are so stupid. Actually who ever trained her should be fired as well.

The problem in Canada they give preference to minority’s and the 58 different genders, rather then the ability to do or learn the job. CATSA is given to the lowest bidder so there is no money to train people that’s the second problem.

I had the same thing happen with Delta in OKC on my way to JoBurg in July. Was also told it was a JoBurg policy. I had to leave my 375 in my truck in OKC to continue the trip. When we got there, plenty of guys had two rifles in one case. Kept my 300 with me for plains game and borrowed a 375 for buffalo.

Silly rules that were made to frustrate people, Pro 2A people.
"Take a gun but don't take two of em"
They should have brought someone of importance there to at least talk to you why the rules have changed.
