New to me CZ550 9.3x62

Thanks, but here in warm & typically San Antonio, TX I'm a bit gunshy of the more temperature sensitive powders like H414. We haven't hit a 100°F day yet in 2019, which is unusual. Last year was very hot & dry, we were already in Stage 2 water conservation restrictions at this point last year. This year the aquifer level has stayed above average so no mandatory water use restrictions at this time.

There's a guy on another forum who's posted using 66 grains of Ramshot Big Game under the 286 grain Nosler Partition for his 9.3X62mm loads, others post they have also worked up to this load with success. His real name is John Barsness. I plan to send that thread to Reed's as a point of consideration when I send my 9.3 mm Mega bullets. I have purchased two boxes Reed's 9.3X62mm ammo with the 9.3mm at 2350 fps MV, but haven't gone to the range yet with my recently new to me 9.3X62mm Zatava M70 rifle.

I’ve got two load work ups ready to go:

250gr Accubonds
Varget
Lapua Brass
210M primers

270gr Speer Hot Cora
RE-15
Lapua Brass
210M Primers

I hope to get out tomorrow and shoot it. Testing will be done as is, but I just picked up a VX5 2-10 from the classifieds. The low-end, FOV, and locking turret are well worth a few ounce weight penalty over the 3.5-10...just waiting on some 30mm Talleys to get here.

Looks like it has had some work done to it, unless CZ started changing their bolt handles.

How so? I’ve owned a few 550s and they all looked identical to this one. I know the magnums have a hollowed bolt knob, but every medium I’ve seen has a swept handle with solid knob.

That must be it, I have only have a magnum.

If it rains much more here in the S.A. area the aquifer might come up to the surface and create a new river walk....man we've had a lot of water over the last 6-8 months.....

Beautiful caliber. If l ever find a ZKK 600 in 9.3 × 62 , I'll snag it. Wally Johnson actually used this gun on Cape Buffalo in Mozambique in the 1950s when Ammunition for his .375 HH Magnum was in short supply .
His was rebarrelled from a .318 Westley Richards .

Hi Hoss,

I did it, two years ago, little used, dated

1967....one of my best, if not the best fitting rifle I have. Nothing to change.

That's about as good as it gets!!

Well, I finally got the rifle sorted the way I want it. I’ve had crap luck with a few VX3i, so down the road they went. Switched over to Meopta 3-9x40 with #4 and haven’t looked back, but this led to another issue. The rubber cover on the ocular does not clear the bolt handle with Talley or Warne medium rings! I found that the Alaska Arms were ever so slightly taller and caught them on sale from Brownell’s over the holidays. It looks like this combo will miss Alabama whitetail season, but I have plenty of time to get a load dialed in for next year!

Congratulations. The 9.3 × 62 Mauser is an underrated classic , which has actually been around longer than the .375 Holland & Holland magnum . I would highly recommend Trophy Bonded Bear Claw soft point bullets or Barnes TSX soft point bullets for your rifle . They should work beautifully .

What a lovely rifle!! I'm sure you'll begin to appreciate the calibre, as I do with mine. Last year I took a cape buff with it. One shot, no fuss. @Spooksar really says it all - "The 9.3x62 is a classic calibre and gets the job done" - and has done so for over a century. (y)

Great rifle, try some RL17, supposed to be the go to for 9.3

That looks like it will be a reliable and rewarding rifle in the field. I like everything about it. Good plan to get accustomed to it by shooting a few deer, then take it to Africa and use it like it was meant to be used!

Awesomeness!
I can't find ANY CZ 550's in 9.3x62. I waited too long obviously. There is a CZ 550 hogback stock with iron sights and a Zeiss dual top turret scope local for $450 in 30-06. For that price I'm thinking of snagging it and sending it to JES Rebore!
Is that old scope worth anything? (ZF6?)

For that price, go buy it tomorrow. The scope alone is worth that.

MPD61, You had best not shoot it before sending for reboring or it just may stay a .30'06.;)
