Hi guys!
I am looking for a good self defence weapon, and someone told me about the Taurus TH 9. I am more of a Glock girl, and the reviews on the TH 9 does not look so good. Can I please have your input? Is there anyone who has a Taurus weapon and what is your take on it?

I no longer own a Taurus, but I purchased one of their 1911s because all the reviews were positive. Didn’t get two magazines through it when the ejector broke. Come to find out it was not a standard 1911 part. After three months and them shipping me the wrong ejectors not once, but twice, I repaired it, cleaned it well and traded it in on another Glock. I took a beating, but I will not purchase another Taurus to use for defense again!
JMO, someone else may have had good luck.

The Taurus price point is what it is for a reason. Glocks are inexpensive because they're able to crank them out like popcorn and the design is simple.

Glocks are reliable, no two ways about it. My only beef is what they call a "safety" (and no, the thing on the trigger does not count as a safety any more than needing to pull the trigger to fire any other weapon would count for the same).

I know Glock seems like plastic, and I would prefer a Glock CZ Beretta, but what would you recommend?

If you're looking for reliability the Glock is nearly impossible to beat. As for the safety, just know that it ain't really got one (the best safety exists between the ears anyway).

My preference is for a 1911 but I'm kind of old-fashioned that way (the same reason I prefer a Mauser 98 over any of its derivatives).

Just one example of the beating a Glock can take:

A simple aftermarket, non-polymer guide rod and it'd have gone a lot longer. Incredible.

For the most part my experience with Taurus firearms has been less than favorable. I’ve never even handled a TH9 but I would say if you are familiar with Glocks, stay with Glocks. In a defensive situation, you want “familiarity”.
If price is a consideration, think about a S&W M&P or Ruger. I have experience with both, as well as Glock, and personally I’d stick with Glock.

Glock, if you keep it in your purse, keep it in a good holster so the trigger doesn’t accidentally get depressed. (I have never have had this happen! Lol. But can see it potentially being a bad deal). The M&P shield is also a good little gun and is glock-ish with option to have an additional thumb safety.

Cheers,
Cody

Where are you from?

I’m sure the criteria for an EDC weapon in the states may well be somewhat different from South Africa.

The factors that make me favor the Glock subcompacts, i.e G19, G23 etc are
1. Reliability
2. Aftermarket parts readily available - night sights, numerous holsters, better triggers, extra mags, etc etc.
3. Magazine capacity. In SA a violent robbery, hijacking, farm attack can easily involve 5+ bad guys, and then it is very very comforting to carry 15 -17 in the mag, with a spare mag on you, and some more in the vehicle, house etc.
4. Still easily concealed- a prerequisite in SA.

Obviously some others like S&W or H&K may tick all the boxes, but finding parts and spares for them in SA is a nightmare.

I owned a Taurus 38 Wheel gun and it was OK,but I replaced it with a SW. I like all metal CZs and I carry a Springfield Arms XDe in 45acp

I don’t have the one your speaking of but I have a Taurus Judge! Couldn’t be happier with it. Shoots the 45 colt and the 410 shotgun shell with personal defense ammo.

I took a concealed carry permit class this past weekend at Cabela’s. Good instructor named Jacqueline from Legal Heat. She has a Facebook page - shootslikeagirl. Gave some firearm guidance: Glock 42/43, Walther ccp, S&W shield, Sig Sauer p320 or p365. She seemed to like the Sig p365. I did some google searches and the Sig P365 seemed to have good reviews.

or you can go Old School

I think one of the main issues with Taurus stuff is their attempt to minimize any milling on their investment cast steel parts. So much of their stuff gets assembled with just enough machining to get the job done and their castings are not all that high quality either. Ruger truly does have the edge in investment cast technology.

However, if you like the glock, I would recommend also looking into the original Springfield XD in 9mm. It isn't even made by springfield and is a Croatian HS2000. It has been (or was) their service pistol for years.

In my opinion, it is everything a Glock should have been. Its pros list reads like everything I want in an autoloader:

1. Polished feed ramp from factory
2. Chamber cut to spec (not bored out like a glock so that brass is almost unusable afterward)
3. Fully supported chamber (Glocks are left partially unsupported which increases reliability but at the price of leaving portions of the case unsupported.)
4. Two passive safeties as opposed to one on the glock (grip and trigger saftey)
5. Massively overbuilt structure without adding a ton of weight.
6. All STEEL accouterments on the frame (no plastic sights or plastic trigger)
7. point-ability like no other handgun I have owned to date
8. Ballard style (land and groove) rifling so shooting cheap lead practice ammo is easy and simple to clean.

I have owned the 4" service model in 9mm. I fired 10's of thousands of rounds through that pistol, everything from +P+ to the wimpiest little loads that would hardly function. If the gun had a hiccup, it has been my grips fault not the guns. In fact I cant recall a time that it jammed on me. It just ran like a top.

I currently own the 5 "tactical" model in .45 ACP. This is mine.

I shoot .45 super out of that gun at 1.25x standard pressure and get amazing ballistics (250 grain bullet @1,000fps, 555ft.lbs as a starting load). The gun handles it without skipping a beat and will likely take years of it with just a simple spring change.

There are many more aspects of it that I love but I won't bore you with details. Anyway, the best part... These are available online at gunbroker for like $400 or less if you keep your eyes peeled. The .45 above cost me $325 shipped.

I just noticed you are in Namibia, I don't know what the availability of pistols is over there, I would say if you can find one that functions reliably with some measure of power (.380, 9mm, . 40, 45) then that is what I would go for. I don't know if your selection is going to be what ours is in the States, where, if you can find it online, you can probably get a gunshop to order it for you, or just buy it yourself..

I am from Namibia
I would just like to be safe with this weapon and not worry about having any difficulty with a magazine or anything. It should be load and shoot.

I would not discount a revolver in .38/.357 from a reputable maker like Ruger or Smith & Wesson. Taurus is very capable of making a revolver but their quality control seems to be hit or miss. If you get a good one though, it’d be just as good as one of the aforementioned brands.
