I am hunting Elephant in a few weeks time and my 470 NE double seems to regulate sub 1 inch at 50m when loading it to 2000 fts (rather than the standard 2150 fts for this calibre).

Is 2000 fts sufficient to take down an Ele-Bull when using Peregrine Monolithic Solids?

Any advice welcome

Solid brass or solid copper? What weight? Do they even make a .475 bullet?

You should be fine. Just put that bullet in the right place job done. Have you calculated ft/lbs energy?? Its ok just did one just shy of 4500ft lbs at the muzzle. I think you should be fine

Its 500gr Solid Copper. PEREGRINE made me some .474 cal Bullets
great choice of bullet...
I can advise on this at 2000 fps vs 2150 fps the elephant does not know the difference
let us know how you do

Welcome to AH NamHunter! Please send us pictures and maybe a report on your hunt! Would love to read one on an elephant hunt!

5400 Joule for buffalo, elephant, rhino etc. Minimum in Namibia.

So you have 6020 Joules vs 6956 Joules

I'd go with Jono's conclusion.

Enjoy your hunt.

Welcome to AH sir. I hope you will share a picture or two with us after the hunt.

Thanks everyone for your advice on the above. After chatting to the PH I ended up loading the bullets to 2150fts. Had a successful hunt bagging a nice Elephant and an Old hippo Bull

Interesting to note though is that the Peregrine Pure-Copper solid deformation/(failure?). While they did the job, I feel that pure copper is just too soft for solids to be used on these HUGE animals.

All three solids were recovered from the Hippo. Left Bullet: First shot passing through the lungs and crushing the far side shoulder bone; Middle: Second shot on the head just below the eye (bullet did not pass through which surprised me), Bullet on the far right recovered on the neck bone after passing through 1 foot of water and entering the neck breaking the neck bone. After chatting to 5 different big game PH's about the Bullet performance all of them mentioned Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer or Barnes as their first hoice. Think that's what I will try on my next hunt.

And though it might not be worth an argument as to how many foot pounds exactly it takes to kill something, it most definitely does matter when it comes to damage and time it takes to drop something by shock.

Some. May not like the recoil that you get when you touch off a 500 gr fmj out of a 460 compared to the same bullet out of a 458 it most assuredly is more damaging.

Well done sir!

Could not agree more. Nothing replaces an accurately placed bullet. But on marginal shots its the "bigger gun" that gets the job done much quicker

NH,

Nice " dozer" you put the smack down on there.

Yes! Unfortunately sometimes shots do go marginal and then the biggest blaster does pay it's dividends in spades. But ya still have to hit good with dangerous game or you can get smooshed.

You obviously have no problem in that department and sub moa at 50 ain't easy to do.

There's only so many ways of arguing with success as you are about as successful as a man can be, but in the future I would investigate a solid guilding metal alloy for the bullet, but not too much tin as you don't really want it too hard either.

Congrats!

Stunning!

2 of my biggest dreams in one thread!

I believe the copper solids have a purpose in deforming as it certainly does more damage.

Brass also has its place, but hey, chances are you wouldn't have been able to recover them then to see!

Personally I would not use or recommend Copper solids as they are just too soft. Especially on Elephant you want a solid that does not deform and keeps its shape to guarantee penetration as that is what is required when hunting elephant. If the bullet you use deforms and does not deliver straight line penetration on elephant you might have a problem.

I only use solid brass bullets with a meplat on elephant(the Woodleigh hydros also seem to be good performers).

They may be ok on side brain shots at 2000 fps but would suggest 2150 fps with meplat brass solids for full frontal.

Shot placement would be more critical with the copper solids.

Personally I would not use copper solids.

Good luck.

Two very nice bulls!
