Anyone have any pet peeves when talking about hunting africa? A few of mine are:

1. When visiting hunters call africans "natives".

2. When hunters in south africa call hunting farms "concessions". A game farm is not a concession, at least not in the true meaning of the word.

3. Hunting being called a "sport". Its so much more than that!

Silly stuff yes but both drive me nuts!

Just one....they have a poor selection of Bourbon. If you want a good one you better buy it in the duty free shop in Atlanta and take it with you!

Windhoek Light, I didn,t come to Africa to drink light beer,,and no Pepsi WTF

I wish hunters would never lead the word "hunting" with either "sport" or "trophy", it's just hunting.

They never have any of that fine Canadian elixir called Crown Royal.

well you will have to come to zambia as was standing next to someone at a bar who had one of these in the bag on the bar top in front of him......

  1. "I'd hunt that animal if it wasn't banned.” You CAN hunt it. You can't bring it back and collect it. Call it what it is.
  2. ”harvesting” an animal. I harvest crops. I kill animals. Again, call it what it is.
  3. ”farms and wild areas are the same. ” No they aren't. Not even close. The stalk itself may or may not be the same, but the total hunt? No way. Ever.
That should be enough of my pet peeves for now. :A Stirring:

Great thread.... Where do I start...?

I suppose I could summarize all of my pet peeves under the general category of those hunters who look down upon, criticize, or ridicule other hunters for their preferred legal methods of hunting when they do match their own.... This includes but not limited to the topics of baiting, high fence, low fence, concessions, game ranch, free range, spot & stalk, hunting from blinds, hunting over water, compound bow, traditional bow, crossbow, open sight, scoped, and the list goes on and on... Now that is how you :A Stirring:

Couldn't agree more. We are all hunters. One mans choice is just that, his choice. I may not agree with it but I will never judge another hunter for what he/she deems as a good or proper hunt.

Or think whiskey is whiskey. I arrived on a holiday last time so when one of the farms owners headed into town a couple days into the hunt I asked for any Irish whiskey, actually wrote down several possibilities. Yeah, I got a bottle of Jack Daniels back and they said it was all they could find. Criminy, I know Tullamore DEW and Paddy exist in Namibia, I grabbed a bottle of Tully in a little shop the first time.
The Jack was OK, but I sure as Hell didn't mix it in the local tasty ginger ale for sundowners like I hoped. Oh well.

This is an interesting topic, i will just sit back and keep my eye on this for some time :D Pop Popcorn:

* Advertising a 1000 acre high-fenced enclosure as "free-range hunting".

* Hearing American hunters say "Berger VLDs are fantastic on African animals because that's what the Best of the West guys use".

* When drivers cruise the bakie through webs full of huge spiders with you sitting in the safari seat.

* The fact that I will never be able to judge a Gemsbok (they all look the same to me).

* Watching trackers/skinners grab some vegetation off the side of the trail, roll it in pieces of newspaper, and smoke it.

* Eating unidentifiable meat, of unidentifiable vintage at roadside food stands.

* Buying a genuine African souvenir for $50, only to find the same exact thing at the Home Goods store near my house for $15.

* The McDonald's french fries in Africa are horrible.

100% agreed!

My #1 pet peeve is that I can't afford to hunt Africa every year! I had my first trip in 2014 and my next one will be in 2018...and I'm still worried about possible unexpected expenses at home that might take some of my Africa fund! :(

#2 is that I'm quickly running out of room in my basement for more trophies! May only be able to have Euro mounts!

Mine is I don't have enough money to go on "hunting" safaris without pulling a trigger (or at least can't justify it!). Sounds weird, but having done it enough...now wish I could just go on month-long safaris, hang out like a "boma fly", tag along on hunts and tell stories around the evening fire. I think Hemingway and Capstick both did that quite a bit. I can visualize Captstick in a bar in Maun or Hemingway in a bar in Havana working on ideas for books :)

Living life like a lion for 1 day is better than living life like a jackal for 100 years.
