The thing is Charlie I never criticized your decision, though I have read/heard people say shooting a hippo on land to be far more exciting and some say in water it's boring. So I haven't indicted anyone. Yet you're on the defensive now. But it didn't seem to bother you to criticize this buff hunt.

Phil- I think your responses to this thread are fantastic! When I shot my buff at Serapa this past summer at 27 yards- it was lying down during first shot and then proceeded to get up and it could have got nasty (we put on a very long, deliberate stalk to get that close- we actually backed out from the morning hunt because it kept going in circles for which it was getting ready to ambush us- he was a very old, grumpy dugga boy that stayed by himself)... It appears that this gentleman has not been in many circumstances in which dangerous game hunting could have turned out life-threatening, so I'll just leave it at that... It is one thing hunting and shooting a whitetail (or other kind-hearted animal) lying down, but it is a VAST difference when it comes to dangerous game. Just saying...

@whitetail, I know Charlies Cape Buffalo, Lioness and Elephant where all standing up and aware of his presents when he shot them, I would say he know the difference between PG and DG hunting. He also has a strong option about shooting animals in their bed, its just something he wont do. It is every hunters right to decide when to shoot and when not to even if the PH tells him to shoot, Charlie and many other hunter including myself would have waited until the Buffalo stood up, after all un-wounded DG is only dangerous when it is on it feet. That statement does not however diminish the hunter, his trophy or the PH's skill or integrity, stalking to with 32 yards of a bedded Dagga Boy with a hunter in tow is an amazing feat and only speaks to the skill of the PH's that work at Serapa Safaris. At the end of the day it is the PH's job to locate and determine the quality of the animal being hunted and its the hunters decision to shoot or not to.

No it sure doesn't. Shot it 3 times (first in the boilermaker, then the neck) and the 3rd in the spine because it was getting up and ready to charge so took the spine shot to drop it- all within 30 yards. It hadn't quite expired as we approached it- then heard the bellow... Also had a close encounter with a huge Tom in Zim 2 months ago- was filming for a buddy. The shot didn't present itself- got down out of the tree and the hounds unfortunately didn't get it re-treed. It stared me down at 25 yards- he and I had a "moment" lol! My buddy was a little far in front and couldn't take a shot. Fortunately it didn't charge me... So, any African DG is DG- whether standing or lying down- especially if you're near spitting distance to them. But that's why I love it- the rush!!!

You are going to absolutely LOVE IT!!! It's such an incredible place and you will for sure feel like family when there and when you leave!.. Make sure you pack a warm jacket because it will be quite cool in the mornings- I was there the first part of August last summer

I wonder why you were taught that? (Just for my enlightenment Charlie.)
I know "ground sluicing" birds was taught to most as not being sporting.

But, if you can "count coup" by being sneaky enough to get up close and personal to a game animal that is lying down why not take them.
I've heard the shot placement argument. - Vitals not in the position you expect.

The closest I have made it in on a wild deer was 4 yards. I backed out from the sleeping animal and sent a youngster in on my track in the snow to see what they could do. After being startled by their proximity to the sleeping deer, they could not believe how close they got, the shot was taken.
It was a very tasty deer.

The sleeping Aardwolf in Botswana at 3 or 4 yards was pretty incredible to. Stalk in, take a picture and left him undisturbed.
