My Latest Purchase 35 Whelen

Played with my Rem 700 35 Whelen a bit over the last few months at the range. It does shoot exceptionally well. So far I've played with 225gr Sierra Spitzers, & Speer 250gr HCSP. I do concur that they basically hold the same POI at 100yds. I am continually amazed at how well the mid bores and big bores shoot. Best groups so far from the bench are 0.35" for the 225gr's & 0.75" with 250's.

I think 225gr bullets are the hot setup for 35 Whelen

Yes, that is interesting isn't it. Expectation is a 23 to 25 caliber will be a tack driver, expectation is not that a 35 caliber is going to be sub-moa - and I'm always suprised. Shows what I know.

And the Fact that the 700 Rem is 2lbs lighter than my New Win Supergrade makes it a natural to make my next Africa trip

Art shoots his really well!

35 Whelen posts been flip flopping between 2 threads here (getting confuddled).
OK so I went to the range and played with 2 loads that performed the best.
I was using a Monarch 3 1-4x20 w/German #4 reticle. Probably going to switch to a scope with a more varied magnification (2-8, 2.5-10, or 3-9).

Rifle Rem 700. Sierra's 225gr Spitzer. Chronograph was 4ft from muzzle. Target distance 100yds
Load 1
51gr's of IMR 3031. CCI 200's. Remington case
Avg 10 shot vel 2460. High 2481. Low 2441. Dev 40fps
10 shot grouping was 2"

Load 2
55gr's IMR 4895 , CCI 200's. Rem cases
Avg 10 shot vel 2451. High 2472. Low 2430 Dev 42fps
10 shot grouping was 1.75"

Just for the heck of it I tried 5 rounds of each load at 200yds. Now with the scope I currently have on it parallax will be an issue and I had to pick a point where I thought the middle of the target was. Top magnification just didn't quite outline the target centre lines.
Anyway Load 1 grouped at 3.10" Granted there was a bit of a crosswind which didn't help.
Load 2 2.75"
Not bad. Probably could do better with a different scope.

I love 225gr in my Whelen Nosler accubond well under Moa with reloader 15 at the top end of Noslers data the hotter it was tighter the group backed off 1/2 grain and group opened 3/4 of an inch. Have a friend who loaded 180gr flat point designed for 35 Rem big mistake 8" exit wound what a mess in a whitetail.

Try the Reloader 15 and the Win 748 they will give more FPS and most likely tighter groups

Getting there. I think those 2 are next in the Sierra manual. Have a new "toy" arriving this week so might play with it as well.
For sight in bullets look at some Speer, a little cheaper than Sierras and of good quality

Just playin' with different weights at the moment. Still have Speer, Nosler & some Hornady's to mess with. Don't like Barnes unfortunately unless its the really old stuff.

For general sighting in Iv'e even bought bulk, when I get some good groups I go to the good stuff and I'm a big fan of Sierra, i took all my plains game with 165G Sierra"s and may CZ550 308 Mannlicher all one shot kills

When you have a choice of carrying a 13lb CZ550in 375HH or a 7.5 lb CZ 308 the choice was EZ, Limpopo Province has some steep terrian and that little Carbine was a God send

Nice animal. I see you used a Nikon Monarch 3. Good choice, but you could have shaved!

Why does this comment make me think of my mother in law?

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
