How many hunt with traditional archery gear?

After seeing a thread that was from awhile back getting pulled up regarding questions about hunting with a recurve, how many have or do hunt with recurve or longbows?
I've been blessed to make the trip over 3 times and have taken all my animals with my longbow. I know most bowhunting that is done now is with compounds, but know a few folks who have hunted with only trad gear.

I used a compound for a while but got bored with it. Have always loved trad archery, especially the old bear bows. I hunt some with a custom longbow and would love to take it to Africa someday, but I'm not very reliable with it at this point, so I won't take it.

Anyone have the link to the amazing bow on AH made from oryx horn? I'd love to own one of those. Due to an injury I can't draw much weight but thought one of those would be formidable with my height and massive draw length. Not sure if they are made for sale?

I applaud the OP for doing something so traditional, it takes tremendous skill.

OP, did you blind hunt or stalk your game?

I can promise, the first time you release an arrow at an animal with a recurve or longbow and you watch it hit the spot you are looking at, it turn hunting with trad gear from a hobby into an obsession very quickly!!

Not sure of the bow you are talking about, but would love to see it. Bows like that are always unique to look at.

Nearly all of my animals I've taken have been from a blind over waterholes. When your max range shrinks drastically (50+ yards for me when shooting a compound down to 20 or less with longbow), the realistic opportunity at animals with spot an stalk pretty much goes down the drain.

I wonder, and you can answer. Does a 32" draw have an accuracy edge over a 27" draw? I was wondering if the longer sight profile might be more precise? Certainly velocity increases.

If I could hunt with a 50lb longbow at 32" I would try.

I remember that thread, but I'm not sure where it is on here. I actually made one myself years ago. Def slings an arrow but stacks early. For your draw you would need extremely long female horns or basically have a 3 piece takedown made, Rook.

50lb longbow is plenty, go for it. I have a Bowyer friend who took a record Maine moose with a 50lb longbow and an old bear razorhead.

Having taken 15 different NA biggame species and about 60 bigame animals with trad gear and a few Africa critters the feeling of satisfaction I get when successful is far more than with my compound.

Any of you flint knappers by chance? Would love to see a flint, chirt or obsidian arrow used for taking of game.

Was watching videos on this as I've always wanted to make arrowheads but can't find a teacher.

I was lucky enogh to harvest this doe with this setup at 12 yards. She made it about 60 yards. One of the highlights of my hunting life.

50 lbs is plenty for US hunting, but some African countries require up to 80 lb. The first article I read on African bow hunting for buffalo, the hunter was using a 90 pound recurve. Daunting!

When you said Osage Orange I looked up your profile, as I knew you must be from around Oklahoma. Congrats on the bow and setup, glad you took out a doe.

I had this Oryx cow horn and Buffalo leather set custom made by a bowyer in South Africa last season.
I took it out on two hunts but has not yet shot anything with it.
The draw length on this one is 28' , but the 70 pd is a bit too much for me,and I was hoping for a 10-15 m shot only.
Not wanting to take chances on these two hunting trips , I then send it back for some modification and it is now about 55-60 [ish] pounds,
[There is not much that could be done as its a raw material]

This coming winter I am going out with it again on warthog and impala.
The first hunt will again be an ambush hunt [warthog and bushpig] and the second hunt hopefully a walk-and-stalk on impala.

They were close enough here, but instinctive shooting with a cloudy and weak moon where I could not clearly see the aiming point was not on for me..
[though the temptation were huge to 'TRY' A SHOT !]
The camera pictures here are far better than actually with the naked eye.

Walk-and-stalk with a 'primitive' and short range Oryx horn bow is VERY challenging , but as a spear-hunter, even an unsuccessful stalk is still hugely rewarding.

Started shooting a long bow in 1960 , then recurve , shot until late 70s, compound every since.
Can't practice for 2 weeks out of the month, (that JOB thing) so I shoot a compound. I need to shoot a long bow every day to stay in tune. Forrest
