SOUTH AFRICA: Andri Fox Safaris Hunt

2. What happens at elk camp, stays at elk camp

Good going so far Cody, keep it up !

Great report and great trophies! Congrats to you and your son!

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the story

Moving right along....I have always wanted a Nyala and that was my main quest for this hunt, I had decided that Saxon was going to get plenty of trigger time in on this hunt and I would sideline and let him have the time of his life, but I wanted to bring a Nyala home with me. We packed enough for a couple of days and drove a few hours to hunt at Andri's friends place.
We dropped our bags and headed right out looking for Nyala. The wind was blowing pretty hard and everything seemed to be down in the canyon bottoms to get out of the wind. We spent all mid day glassing and walking ridges, finding several Nyala. One in particular I thought was very nice, Andri said we would do better, Always listen to your PH! So I took a few pictures and we backed out.

This was the bull that we passed on, I thought he was gorgeous, but glad was glad I waited.

That afternoon we went to a very large conservancy and started walking a ridge line up into the canyon. We immediately spoted two kudu bulls and watched them for a good while.
Moving up, I was really enjoying the walk through this beautiful country when Andri got excited and I was on the sticks. I asked if this was good enough, he simply said "shoot". Now the Nyala was down and we were on top of a shear face, we carefully negotiated our way down and I got to lay my hands on the gift the good lord had provided us. 5 years of anticipation was over and I couldn't have laid the moment out any better. He was quartering toward me quite hard, the A-Frame entered just behind the shoulder and exited where you can see in the picture.

I don't know how many inches he measures, and I don't particularly care, all I know is it was an absolutely perfect hunt. Being a die hard elk hunter and having picked some terrible places to shoot bulls, I was looking at the extraction and commented that it was going to be rough getting him out. Andri told me that we were going to definitely break a sweat watching the guys get him out. I laughed my ass off, got to love everything about Africa!
We returned to the camp that night for a wonderful meal and great conversation with some local hunters that were there. We talked a lot about the difference between RSA and the US on firearms and reloading, made me realize just how good we have it here in terms of choices and freedoms we have when it comes to these topics. Great people, loved meeting them and sharing a fire a few beers and a perfect evening.

What a great adder to this trip, to really have a Rhino in front of me was one of the coolest things I can imagine, short of having a Rhino on my list and a 505 Gibbs in my paws. I will figure out a way to hunt one soon!

Yeah that's cool to get that experience with a Rhino! What a beast

Absolutely, now I just need to find somebody to buy this liver from me so I can hunt one!
One owner single malt filter only used in the evenings.

Lmfao Cody, if you're like me. And I know you are. That liver isn't worth 2 cents. We best find other body parts that may sell better. Left arms, legs, etc....

...............
Oh that snarky little grin that a kid gets when he knows that he has something on you yet knows he will get choked for it. He says in a gentleman like manner, we all miss sometimes pop, my dear smart ass! ...........
I can imagine your fingers twitching. I like your son.

Sooooo, I put my rifle in the back seat withdraw a cold castle from the cooler ............ .
You have to know when to put the first string in the game!

Just reading this Cody.

Great hunt!

Up for a quick breakfast and out in search of Zebra. Saxon has always been fascinated by them and a flatskin would look great in his room. I along the way decided I needed one also so dos zebra it is! Saxon was under the complete misconception that zebra are docile little ponies that stand out in the field and you pick one out at a leisurely pace. My experience with them previously told me different and these lived up to my expectations. I'm not quite sure how many times Andri and Sax made attempts to get a shot but it involved a bunch of walking, both them and the trackers, I sat comfortably in an over watch position from the comfort of the bakkie. Saxon couldn't get on one quick enough and they would be gone, I believe everyone was at the end of their rope by the time one presented a shot, it was rushed and the bullet struck the stallion in the front leg, mass confusion ensued until we picked up blood, evidently the bullet put the breaks on him enough that another bullet could be put in him to bring him down within five minutes. The other zebra was just up the hill and dropped at my shot, dropped hard mind you! I was looking at Saxons when he said "Dad, I think yours is getting better!" Followed quickly by Andri saying, "yeah dad, I think he is better"
To my surprise my zebra was back on its feet looking at me! WTF! Boom, down again for good this time! We make it over to Saxons and
Dispatch it finally, at this point I have deemed this the great zebra debacle of 2016, smoke cleared, guns clear, two zebra down and a total of 7 rounds expended and absorbed! After loading the zebras I plugged my phone in and a Hank Williams Jr song played with the main line being keep on swinging, this gave Andri a rise after the epic shitshow that he had just witnessed take place.
Saxon has changed his mind about zebra after the black and white striped combat he experienced.lol

I needed a larger version of an Impala, plus the taxidermy on mine absolutely sucks and aggravates me when I look at it. There was rumor of a nice one in a different area so we went looking for him. We found a group of Rams and one stood out in the group. The range was about 260, I held just above center line and off he ran, seemingly unscathed! I was quite distraught with myself at this point. Maybe an hour later we set up on him again and made a perfect shot. Upon looking my first bullet had clipped him along the bottom of his brisket and not a drop of blood could be seen. Andri and I both believed it a clean miss! So glad we got him and didn't leave him wounded.

This guy will make me very pleased to look at on the wall.
We headed to the skinning shed, gathered our things and headed back to Andri's ranch.

Wow that is a cool Impala!

And good job on World War Z ;)

Thanks Bob, I was really happy with that Impala. I probably should have intervened on the zebra sooner than I did but I know I am not keen on someone shooting my animal and it bothers me to sort one out for someone. That isn't the first zebra I've seen soak up the lead, I don't know if they are tough or I'm just predisposed to bad luck. Both my shots apeared well placed yet it still got up after the first 300 grainer!

Yip, they sure are;)

Sure different than home. You think about the stupid places you are about to shoot something when you have to pack it out.

You do have to love Africa!

Nice bull.

Great report Cody! I like how you write. Your boys head got larger while your drink got emptier!

I just got done reading a report of brickburn's from a Namibia hunt and then found yours. Great reading!!

Looking forward to the rest of this story!

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
