Ok folks here we go with a report to forum members on my experience with riflepermits.com.
So far so good!!!. I contacted Henry to get clarification on the steps I must take to secure my temporary rifle permits in advance of arrival at OR Tambo. Once I filled out the forms and assembled the support documents I scanned them to my computer and emailed all to Henry. I asked him to review for accuracy and completeness. The next morning I had my reply that all was in order. I just sent the package of documents FedEx to arrive next Thursday at the riflepermits.com office in Pretoria. The big shock was the cost at $108 to ship the documents. Wish there was a way to do this via email. Don't even think about snail mail as that could take four weeks. Add nine months to that if South Africa postal workers go on strike.

A couple of things that US citizens may find odd is that Henry will need notarized copies of your passport and 4457s. I say odd because the 4457s are stamped by homeland security as real. Never the less this is what Henry needs to get the permits. You are also asked to go ahead and sign the SAPs 520. This seemed wrong to me in that on two previous permit applications I did not sign the document until in front of the police officer at OR. Tambo. But once I thought it through I realized I will not be there when the application is made for the permit. So I signed it as requested.

My flight arrives in Johanesburg at 4:50 in the afternoon. Hope Delta flight 200 has a big tailwind like last year and we will get there an hour ahead of schedule. Pieter, Bryson and I will then drive about five hours to the Balule area so getting through passport control and getting the rifles needs to go smoothly but most of all quickly. In light of this fact I have opted to have Henry meet me at the gate and escort us through passport control. This service is a little extra and I hope to report that it is worth it. I have waited in that passport line for up to 1 hour and then spent another hour getting the rifles when I was doing all the paperwork myself with the help of the PH.

I have heard from other members that Henry's service went well for them and that the entire process was made easy. I look forward to reporting back just that to everyone here.

Charlie, when I spoke to Henry last year he told me you could fax everything over. That would have saved you the $108.00. No?

I am sure that you will be surprised at how fast his service will get you through all the lines and out the door.

While I used a different permit service we were whisked through all the long lines and taken right to the front of the lines. We actually went so fast that if I even tried to remember just where we went and what we had to do I couldn't, and I am sure that Henry's service is just as fast.

As for sending your documents FedEx or USPS.......DO IT. I used USPS and while it is $100 cheaper my documents were tied up in a postal strike for 3 weeks, it was a good thing that I sent them in January for a trip to arrive in May. The next time that I fly over I will go the added expense and use FedEx.

I normally only need to fax the documents through,at least I did in March.

I was able to scan and email my documents to Henry like you did. I just brought the hard copies with me. I wonder what is different? Nevertheless, even having to spend $108 is well worth it!

That clarification would go a long way to saving some money.

When I spoke to Henry he said it was acceptable to e mail the documents...Unless that has now changed?

You will go likely to the front of passport control if it's like it was for me in 2013 with Henry's representative. Yes, they'll be right there as you exit the jetway and take you right to passport control.

On my way over I try to check only my rifles and ammo, everything else in carry on. If you do this, I bet you'll be in the SAPS office in 10 mins or less after you exit the plane.

We have always only had to scan and email. Charlie as I understand it, the reason you need those forms notarized is because they should be copies, not originals. The notary is essentially confirming the copy is real... You are supposed to take the copy and original to the notary... Good luck getting a notary to understand what your asking for! Find a reasonable older "can do" person not some young "can't do" junior loan officer at Wells Fargo:mad: You should keep the originals on you or in your carry on. You take a photocopy of the original on a full size piece of paper so there is space for a notary stamp. Get it notarized, scan it and email it... Along with all the other stuff... DO NOT color copy or scan in color your passport! Do any important personal docs in black and white so they are obviously copies, for your protection from identity theft.

You getting pre-approved permits from the Pretoria office of SAPS. That is why you needed to sign them. I booked that elephant hunt last minute last year, plus had my rifle not fully sorted yet, so ended up waiting until the last minute to get permits so there was not enough time for Henry to get pre-approved docs from Pretoria... So we went with the option of hiring him to meet us in the greeting hall and helping us fill out the permits on site... Potentially a little more time while you wait for the officer to type it all into the computer... But Henrys people are there anyway and had time while waiting for us, we had supplied all the info via email which Henry's rep had in a file with her.... It was slow at SAPS so they went ahead and had it all done by the time we got there and were just waiting for our signatures! And the fee was only $60 (vs. $100 for the pre-approved permits... I was thrilled and tipped $40 and they helped us all the way through re-checking our luggage and took us right up to security and sent us on our way to our connecting flight. In fact my wife thought I should have tipped more as they were so helpful. Now I have always gone during slower times... if you go in the peak hunting season, probably well worth the pre-approved fee.

Thanks Action Bob. Perhaps I missed something but there was no indication that I noticed saying we could just email the stuff. If there had been I could have saved $100. Everyone else might ask that before going to FedEx or DHL

I had to fedex them as well. I also emailed several things also but Henry requested the originals be sent to him. I also did the upgraded meet and greet. It was like 240$ and cost me $106 to FedEx them. If it goes as smooth and hassle free as I think it will it will be worth Evey penny. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Gizmo!

No sweat buddy, if you said it I missed it, what day do you leave. I leave next Friday. We drive to Ft.Worth the 27 and are Africa bound the 28th!

I scanned and emailed everything. I didn't have to FedEx? I don't get that either???

Yep! Elephant it is with Pieter from Paw Print. I posted a Range report on the 458 Lott with pictures of the target. But check out the 416 target I also posted.
