Chapuis 9.3X74R - advice sought

So this rifle is available close to me and I thought it could be fun both for the range and for hunting bear.

It would be my first double, and I never owned or even handled a Chapuis product. The price looks okay as it is in CDN.

Does the collective have any advise, guidance or experience to share on this type of double? Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

Good buy even if it were in US dollars. They are fantastic guns for the price. The ones I've shot grouped well. The 9.3 X74R works really well in the Chapuis and easy to regulate. Go for it you won't
be disappointed!

At $5000 Canadian this Chaouis 9.3 x 74R with EAW pivot mounts is a steal!

These are excellent rifles, highly rated by Pierre van der Walt and Gregor Woods. I have one myself and it is a lovely rifle with excellent handling, which I prefer over my H&H .375. The beavertail forend works well with this rifle.

Obviously check that the rifle is in good condition, but the price is certainly good to very good. Replace the 'scope with a low magnification Swarovski EE, which will cost you around the same as the rifle (if you can find one). Chapuis will sell you a leather case for it.

If you are able to look it over it yourself, invest in an iPhone endoscope (available on Amazon, surprisingly cheap, bloody Chinese) and check the bores for any obvious damage. Otherwise get a third party to give you a condition report. Let us know how you get on!

Does Chapuis have intercepting sears?
This one I believe it comes with 1" rings, so Swaro is a no go.

I concur with Mark. I have owned several Chapuis over the years. Always upgraded and my Chapuis RGEX 9.3 is my favorite rifle that I own. I would advise buying it and have fun!

I have had five Chapuis, in both 9.3x74R and 450/400. They are excellent double rifles and all of mine were regulated very well. I didn't hunt dangerous game with my 9.3 but the gentleman I sold my 450/400 to got a wonderful Cape buffalo on his safari.

I am still working on it. Don't have it yet. Should have it in a week or so.

I have bought a number of new guns and lots of parts/ammo from Epps before, but this will be my first used rifle from them.

If you like historical elegance in an effective, excellent cartridge that gets little recognition, you will appreciate the 9.3 x 74R. I have owned it in drillings and doubles which I have since sold. Due to age/health I am now relegated to shooting large boar. I now use a single Blaser K95. It just works so damn well and history backs that up.
