It seems this product really is not available in South Africa . If any member visit South Africa I really would appreciate it if you can bring me some of this product with. Thank you I already worked that info through a week ago..I am now searching for more info regarding the processes ..see what different red oils people are using. I will make a red oil and complete the end result with Tru-oil to give me that deep inside look into the wood grain..will soften the TRU-OIL shine by applying 1000 gn steel wool ..it will give a in-dept look into the wood grain..

So mines still a work in progress bht thats kinda the process im using injust dumped root powder jnto a mason jar withba pint of oil. And im justbperiodically applying coats. Gonna do one a week prolly till end of summer

Have you tried soap manufacturers, it’s used to colour soap so they may have it or be able too tell you who does, or a natural dye retailer?

Edit, it appears to be on Etsy so they may sell to you, shouldn’t be a restricted item, tell them it’s for home made soap.

Dozens of alkanet suppliers on eBay. Just remember most instruction state that you have to let it steep in the oil for months, skaking the jar daily. Good luck with your project.

Bought mine on amazon. Put a bag of it into a 5 litre container of linseed oil. Use it as needed, mixed with mineral spirits or pure. On gunstocks, furniture or even the wooden floor. Like it a lot!

I used red food colouring to stain the raw wood and then applied oil over the top. The stuff you gwt at pick and pay.in liquid form. People online said it will fade but 6 or 7 yrs hasn't changed the colour. If the colour is too strong, you can rub it with sandpaper to remove.

I use 2 oz of linseed oil, 2oz of turpentine, 1 oz of alkanet root powder. Sit in a window for two months and shake it once a week. after 2 months or more I open the jar and pour it through a coffee filter into a clean jar and use it.

Gert I am not going to be in south Africa this year. But if you can get someone that is coming over i can send them a couple oz of the root powder to bring to you.

One thing to add to this, you must use raw linseed oil, not boiled. Raw will allow the mixture last indefinitely, as it will not harden. Boiled will (takes awhile, but it does harden).

@Gert Odendaal , I ordered mine from Amazon. Should be able to order alkanet powder from them in Europe.

I will be in RSA this year, but not until the last week of July. I think we arrive at Tambo on the 25th. I'd be happy to bring that to you then if you can wait. If somehow you can't meet me then, we will be stopping in Klerksdorp where Jacques Spamer has his home and we can leave it there for you to pick up.

@AZDAVE lives just a few hours down the road from me and may be able to drop it off if he's coming thru Phoenix. Let me know.
