And I just bought a Kodiak in .338 Win Mag

As a left-handed shooter, I'm usually a fan of any company that makes the effort to produce rifles for people with my particular affliction. I really do prefer the bolt to be on the proper side of the rifle especially when a scope is mounted. So Sako is really high on my list of favorites. What is surprising is that I currently only own one: A LH Sako 85 Hunter chambered in 30-06. Smooth. Well-balanced. It's the most accurate rifle in my safe so there's a lot to love. I came really close to ordering a Sako 90 in 6.5x55 SE earlier this year but in an unusual fit of financial responsibility, I balked at the last minute after getting a quote.

In the picture below you can see the Sako above my Winchester 70 Safari Express in 375 H&H. It has a Schmidt & Bender 1.5-8x42 Stratos mounted on it which is a great scope for the hunting that I do. I can cover a lot of situations with this combo. This would probably be my PG choices if I ever make it to Africa after I retire.

Financial responsibility? You should buy that 90 now, before the cost doubles - that's financial responsibility

I hope your Black Bear shots as well as mine. One hole, 5 shot groups at 100 yards

My LH Sako 85 Hunter in 30-06 is my only rifle I've ever shot a one-hole group with. If I ever miss a shot, it is absolutely 100% my fault. :D

An eclectic mix: It looks like I was shooting a 300 HAM'R, 303 British, 35 Remington & my Sako that day...

Thanks! I have exceptionally low will-power when it comes to buying rifles so your suggestion is wildly unhelpful! ;) :D

I am hopeful they'll release another line of Safari Rifles similar to the brown bear - They debuted the 85 in 2006, and they didn't release the brown bear until 2011 - I still have hope!

I own 3 but don't have a picture at the moment.
An AV laminated in 300 winchester
L61r deluxe from 68 in 30-06. Good story on this one. Air force general bought it in England new and brought it home after hunting all over with it during his career. His 80 year old son sold out to me a couple years ago.
And a quad 17hmr
It's Sunday, get a picture! ;-)

I have owned 5 Sakos over the years, though only own 2 now. In my opinion, the AV was the last of the good Sako rifles. I have only owned one model 85 and have been very disappointed with it - accuracy has been poor and feeding very unreliable. Whereas all the pre model 75 Sakos I have owned have been excellent.

I have posted on the forum about my AV in 375H&H before, but its by far my favourite Sako:

Lots of good looking rifles here. Love my AVs

Another XL to go with Daniel’s.

My 85 Brown Bear in .500 Jeffery.

Unfortunately it suffers from the ‘untidy’ ejection issues present in a number of 85s.

It now wears an Aimpoint H1.

Can’t recall the exact weight, but it is too light for the .500, and quite the handful to shoot.

The factory stock is also on the short side for me - hence the spacer.

I’d like to get it restocked one day.

Want to sell it?

My only Sako is a model A1 in .222. It still shoots under 1/2" with 40gr. Barnes CLC's and 24.0gr. AA2230, as well as 1/4" with 52Match and 21.5gr. IMR4198.
Back in the 70's when I was introduced to 3-position shooting, a number of the lads (mostly WW11 pilots) were using A1's for match rifles. For me, it's a gopher rifle.

Back in the 80's I worked on a .375 H&H Sako for a friend in Smithers. It needed bedding as it was stringing shots. I found the recoil lug of the action was riding on the rounded top surface of the round cross-bolt through the stock's recoil bench. I ground the round cross bolt down and back that was the recoil lug with a carbide cutter in my dremel-tool, then bed in a piece of rectangonal 1/8" steel with Devcon Plastic Steel(50/50) for a perfect fit on the recoil lug. This rifle, then with 69gr. IMR4064 & 270gr. Hornady bullets cloverleafed at 100 yards for the owner. He won a number of turkey shoots with this rifle, shooting against the club member's .222's and .243's. It was a nice shooting rifle.

I like my Sako's. I have been collecting them since my first one (AV in .270 win) in the early 80's
Apart from my Sako Quad all of them are early models.

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
