I appreciate Tubby standing in the ring for his country. He’s repeatedly said he doesn’t agree with the Canadian policies or the politicians, but he’s still going to defend his country. I don’t agree with everything he says, but it’s a shame that these greasy politicians in Canada in the US. I have created a crack between our two tight knit countries.

I know the exact strategy Trump uses to start negotiations. It’s an age old psychological tool to immediately show who is running the negotiations and who is dominant, but those tactics should be used against somebody that is not bargaining in good faith. And definitely not on a leader that knows the same basic tactics .

I appreciate the kind words, someone’s got to wade in on Canadas behalf I’m not exactly sure why it seems to fall mostly to me. I pick up heavy things and put them down for a living and routinely butcher the English language.

The same Dick Durbin who never asked for investigations into the threats on Trumps SCOTUS appointees.

I grew up in Illinois. The fact that it has been controlled for this long by these slimeballs shows what can happen when you dumb down the major voting block enough.

On the aircraft shot down?

While I can see the usual exchange of artillery on unmanned observation posts as a throwback to the previous decades, the fact that civilians are being killed, and the accusations of strike aircraft seem to be an escalation?

Also - curious on your opinion. Who is the most reliable source in the region?

My default would be to BBC

As bad as I hate to admit it, when reporting on non gulf state Arab issues, I often find Al Jezerra to be the least biased and most detailed reporting of major news outlets..

You have to peel back any possible Qatar, Islam, or Gulf State conflict connectivity (for example I would fully expect a slight pro Pakistan slant when reporting on Pakistan-India issues)… but generally speaking I find them much more balanced than BBC, Sky, CBC, CNN, etc..

After reading Al J reporting I’ll usually then look at what regional outlets have to say about whatever the topic of the day is… and only after that start to consider Fox, CNN, BBC, etc perspectives (taking them all with a fairly large grain of salt)…

I also take a look at who specifically is doing the reporting… sadly there are few journalists left in the world that deliver all of the relevant information.. most have clear agendas.. as do the agencies they work for.. once I figure out what their bias is, I try to apply the appropriate filter…

Oxfordcat , many here on the political thread have strong feelings, beliefs. You make some valid points. On your “what is a conservative” topic. I think people move in and out of different definitions and levels of liberal and conservative . For example people look at Teddy Roosevelt and think (staunch conservative) was actually turning into a social liberal. He had many liberal
Leaning ideas. Not left how we view the left now. But how I wish the Democrat party would return to.

Many on AH are the Alpha in their respective local circles. So we tend to think our way is the correct path.

But, It’s not a good idea to argue with mdwest or RedLeg regarding world affairs. Someone may catch them on the back foot occasionally or off guard. But on average they are a wealth of knowledge and add a lot of value to these discussions.
Its true. But often on these forums with lots of americans present it ends up with a shoutingcontest. Like in these times if critizing Trump or “america” some get personal and ends up with a reaction rather than a respons. That clearly stats fairly quickly of a emotional deficit if one scratch the paint.

One of the great aspects of AH is the fact it is an international group willing to speak their mind. In this thread in particular, that disparate view of world affairs has been very educational for me. Perspective is everything in interpreting and gauging global issues. Hearing these varied, often conflicting, opinions on what all of us are seeing going on around the world has given me a better understanding of how others are being impacted.
Personally, I find the analysis of world events from those here with experience in very diversified arenas of professional fields, much more useful and informative than what I can get from any of the news sources and talking head groups out there. (It has also improved my use of the dictionary and thesaurus, lol). For those of you that English in not your first language and worry about butchering it, the posts that are the most abominable in language are typically from those who claim this to be their first, maybe only, language. Don't let that concern stop the dialogue.
This is all to say, Thanks! for the conversation.

Also recognizing that I can't be on the highest of horses commenting about decorum while having to habitually edit my posts:

My strong preference is to weigh in while on the computer.
But immediately following the election I'm just tuning in sporadically from Barbados on my phone, and it leaves much to be desired.

Feeling somewhat superior over us inbred, Trump voting Americans? Okay, let’s review this passport issue…

A higher percentage of Canadians have passports than Americans. Now why oh why could that be? Maybe because there is nowhere to vacation in Canada, other than skiing and seeing polar bears!

Hmmm, while I like our non-superior brothers in Canada, most Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S.A. border. I don’t think Canada has many tropical vacation locations. Oh, Canada has great skiing, hunting albeit with certain anti-gun restrictions, and wonderful farmlands and mountains. That stated, not many people vacation in Alberta, do they?

Americans can without leaving U.S. soil go to beach in Florida, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, Marianna Islands and maybe another location or two. We can also ski mountains, and enjoy countless acres of public (BLM) lands for hiking, mountain biking, hunting and shooting, and so on. Most of that public land isn’t under a foot of snow for half the year.

Americans can drive or fly state to state for a vacation and everyone speaks the same language. J We have subcultures that differ enough to make visiting fun! I believe I’ve traveled to every state in the USA and even though I’ve spent time in Europe, Asia, and Africa, I didn’t leave anything behind in Europe or Asia… Nice to visit but I can also visit other states and drive home.

Finally, the map below isn’t new but look at the size of our land compared to Europe. Yes, I know Canada is a larger land mass, but that includes your tundra, perma-frost, and areas that most people seldom venture. So, I don’t know how big the 100 mile strip is that borders the U.S.A. where 90% of Canadians live, but I bet it is no larger than the whole area of Texas!

I like my brother Canadians but the U.S.A. didn’t cause your problems. Your liberal voting, socialist leaning fellow Canadians did.

Because I possess the cognitive ability of rational thought I can look at Trump's frequent tirades and recognize those as behaviors exhibited by Kindergarteners - not adults - and also recognize that as the leader of the free world he should be more circumspect and not resort to trolling. His juvenile bullying rants come across to me as an intellectual deficit.

Hmmm... Well, that is certainly one way to look at it... Another way is to see is that whether you like the delivery or not, we have the most powerful politician in the world speaking plainly, openly, and directly for a change... When Trump first announced his candidacy in 2015, I couldn't stand to listen to him... Now, I have come to appreciate his candor and sense of humor that too many people fail to appreciate... It's surprising that he can still have a sense of humor after all of the BS and false persecution he has endured... They literally tried to destroy this guy for years and you think it's beneath the office of the POTUS for him to hit back now and then? These scumbags deserve everything they get and more... The left, along with the TDSer's are humorless, and understandably so... People guided by emotion rather than reason usually lack the intellectual perspective to have a sense of humor...

Unless I have missed something, I haven't seen Trump throw a "bullying rant" or a tirade in a very long time... For the most part, his rhetoric has remained the same, but his demeanor is markedly different in that his trolls are subtle, and his "rants" are usually very subdued almost to the point of being stoic... I really enjoy how he now calmly and passive-aggressively destroys his critics and the MSM directly to their faces... TDSer's are unable to acknowledge this change. The mere thought of Trump sends them into an alternate universe where the bad orange man lives in their heads rent free...

Regardless, the point is not about Trump or his character flaws.... My point is that by now, like him or hate him, anyone with a semblance of common sense who has been paying attention should be very used to Trump's style of communication...The fact that so many from all political persuasions are still triggered by him to this day truly amazes me... At least those on the left have an excuse in that they are insane...

It’s apparent that Vance and Trump now realize that Putin is not a serious partner in negotiations.
Their comments, the last few days show that they are about to escalate the aid to Ukraine.

Maybe someone else can shed some light on what else they plan to send Ukraine besides the F-16 parts and the patriot missiles already promised. Trump should now allow more offensive weapons to be sent and used.

Hopefully Ukraine will now be given “Full Rein” .

I think what often gets missed is some of the more vocal members that participate in this thread (myself included) are actually pretty pro-Canada (and pro-European allies) and also. while largely conservative in beliefs/ideology, are NOT on the Trump train..

I openly admit that I am on board with much of Trumps agenda in its foundational premise.. I believe a head of state should put his state first and strongly negotiate (or straight up fight if necessary) in support of what is in his countrys national interest (strategic, financial, cultural, or anything else).. Im all for putting to bed what I think has been the insanity of extreme leftism that has riddled the US (and much of the rest of the world) for the last several years.. etc.. etc..

At the same time, Im not much of a fan of the manner in which the Trump Administration is going about pursuing its agenda.. I could care less about mean tweets, silly nicknames, etc.. its pretty easy for me to ignore the childish bravado of a billionaire new yorker.. I don't get offended or even remotely concerned about "51st state", "Pocahontas", and all of the things that flow out of Trumps mouth and then stay in the headlines of our collective newsfeeds for the next few weeks.. If anything I find it both somewhat confusing and amusing when people that seem otherwise intelligent and knowledgeable get bent out of shape over it... If you know what is said isn't true, why would you care whats been said? Peoples words and opinions only matter if you allow them to matter... and if you believe it to actually be true, why get offended? wouldn't the better response be to do something about it instead of throwing a fit over someone stating a truth that you didn't want to hear?

What concerns me about the manner in which the Trump Administration is going about pursuing its agenda is the actual methodology..

For example.. Im all for reciprocal tariffs.. if Canada can protect its dairy industry with a tariff, then the US can protect its steel industry with a tariff.. you cant have it both ways.. and if its important enough to Canada to be able to sell steel to the US, it is then incumbent on Canada to figure out a way to convince the US government to allow it (i.e. Canada is going to have to give up something somewhere if it expects the US to give up protection of its steel industry)..

Tariffing the entire world at once however isn't a very pragmatic approach in my opinion.. I think a better approach would have been to pick the 4 or 5 biggest issues the US has with international trade, and attack them with the full weight, force, and power of the US economy.. and get a handful of very notable and very influential "wins" under our belt.. then, with the standard set and all the rest of the world watching, start picking off every other issue on the list one by one.. I think that would have been less disruptive to the economy.. would have gained much more support from the US courts, the US congress, and the US people that are not part of the MAGA movement, and been much more unifying for the US, while at the same time sent a very strong message to the rest of the world that you're getting a phone call pretty soon.. you're not going to like it.. so be prepared for it.. and have a plan together to negotiate... as opposed to sending the entire globe into panic mode..

I don't readily buy into the "friends" argument (i.e. this isn't how you treat your friends), although at times I think it applies.. countries that rely on each other militarily, economically, etc at a minimum need to trust each other... Trump clearly doesn't care at all about "friends".. he sees a much more black and white world I think where you're either a winner or a loser.. I think the problem there is he isn't paying attention to the long term impact on trust..

That said, I find it curious that many Europeans, Canadians (and others) have had governments and heads of state that very clearly have not acted in a trustworthy manner toward the US, and/or that have gone out of their way to purposefully insult Trump individually or the US generally.. and think that is ok and acceptable.. but get highly offended when the roles are reversed and the trust breach comes from the other direction..

Merkel immediately labeled the US as no longer a friend (specifically saying her party was not a friend of the US) after Trump was elected the last time.. and then rushed to sit her plump ass in the Whitehouse and laugh it up with Biden shortly after he took office..

Zelenskky purposefully stumped for Biden in Pennsylvania during our last national election..

Before Trump took office the last time Trudeau made numerous negative statements about how naive Americans were and what a terrible blight Trump was on US politics..

Anyone remember the Trump Baby balloon flown over Londons parliament square?

So offensive comments, offensive behaviors, etc. condoned and supported by governments and heads of state about the US and its senior officials are ok? but God forbid Trump act like a dick when addressing Carney or making a 51st state comment? Lets all lose our minds over that.. and just write off baby balloons...

(FWIW I thought the baby balloon was childish and beneath the brits.. but admittedly it was funny.. I did indeed laugh)..

I think perhaps we should all step back and admit ALL of our respective politicians are shit birds to one degree or another.. they all take cheap shots at each other whenever given the opportunity.. they all will take advantage of someone else whenever given a chance.. none of them are completely honest.. all of them have been caught in lies, deciet, and poor behavior at some point or another.. We can talk about Trump "grabbing them by the pussy".. or Trudeau in blackface and having improper relationships with students.. or Carneys relationship to China... or Starmer accepting excessive "gifts".. or Von der Leyens relationship with phizer.. but so what? Are we really going to argue who is the worst human being within a collection of bad human beings? You don't get to those positions of power and influence without skeletans in the closet piled all the way to the ceiling.. they all suck...

The only difference is Ramaposa sucking has negligible impact on the US.. Trudeau and Carney sucking, as bad as Canadians don't want to hear it, has more impact than South Africa.. but its still not enough impact for most Americans to worry about it.. The EU sucking, UK sucking, etc.. a bit more impact.. but, again the majority of Americans arent going to be bothered by it much... so the average American doesn't pay a whole lot of attention, and doesn't really care.. their attitude is going to be "oh.. Starmer is pissed at Trump? that's sorta funny... fuck that guy.." and they arent going to think much about it past that..

Whereas the US, with its economy and military.. when its leaders suck.. the rest of the world is impacted noticibly.. and obviously its citizens care and pay attention..

"most powerful politician in the world speaking plainly, openly, and directly for a change."

A person can speak plainly, openly, and directly and not be an absolute dick about it. He doesn't seem to realize that, and I find it embarrassing.

"I really enjoy how he now calmly and passive-aggressively destroys his critics."

I find nothing appealing about the leader of the free world being passive aggressive. Yet another intellectual deficit.

"My point is that by now, like him or hate him, anyone with a semblance of common sense who has been paying attention should be very used to Trump's style of communication."

Why would anyone want to get used to poor, boorish behavior? I didn't like it with Biden. I don't like it with Trump. If my kids acted that way I would be upset and embarrassed, and there would be corrective actions on my part. We very clearly have different levels of expectation about acceptable behavior. From your perspective I am overreacting. From mine you are settling for behaviors that I feel certain you would have found entirely unacceptable in perps during your law enforcement days, but you are willing to excuse in the POTUS.

Trump would refuse because he’s got no interest in allies, the art of the deal is shaft everyone you can and let them negotiate for the Vaseline.
How do you think it affects relations going forward?
The next time the west coast burns down why should Canadians risk their lives fighting the fires? The next time a hurricane destroys New Orleans why should we send aid within hours while still in the cross hairs of the storm ourselves? The next time your country is attacked and you close your airspace why should Canadians open their homes to your countrymen?

It’s often stated on here that the Liberal/socialist experiment of the last 10-15 years was an abject failure how do you feel the raw capitalist experiment that is going on now will be viewed?

When did America first come to mean America only?
i was visiting with a canadian financial adviser this last week and he was upset at trump too. (which i don't blame him for) he raged a little about how awful he was. i asked him one question, why don't BOTH of our countries just drop ALL tariffs then? he did not have an answer.

That’s good news and should further soothe markets over the coming weekend..

I’ll be curious to dig in and see what all the deal contains.. but it sounds like both parties are genuinely happy…

Hopefully negotiations will go equally well with Carney over the next couple of months and much of this can be put to rest..

The British ambassador is over the moon happy with the tariff deal. They and the US are joining to fight foreign steel being dumped in the UK and US. More parity in auto sales, UK will take more US beef as long as it meets their standards. It’s a big win for both parties.
Hopefully Canada uses it as a template.
