Opinions on the real big boys? 500J, 505 Gibbs, .500 NE, 577NE, 600NE, 700NE etc.

I've learned to give my "Baby" more respect lol Now it's my favorite rifle to shoot offhand. And yes I was holding the rifle correctly lol!

I don't think I would have the determination or courage to shoot any 570 Grain bullet at a velocity about 2150 fps.

I've settled on my 2300 fps load. Fun, does the job, fun index was zero at 2510 fps

Shooting with big bore rifles is not a heroic act that should result in injuries and scars. Some people should perhaps reconsider whether they continue shooting with such rifles before they suffer even more serious injuries. Everything does not seem very serious to outsiders who are not familiar with big bore rifles. I also don't understand why some people buy such rifles if they are not hunting DG and especially elephants. Even for buffalo hunting, such cartridges are oversized and I have never needed a big bore rifle for shooting deers or wild boars.

That's some wild bruising on the arms, are you 2 sure you are holding your rifles correctly? I quite often do range sessions firing up to 16-18 rounds and sometimes more with my 500 Jeffery and I don't even end up with a mark on my shoulder let alone bruising on my arm. The next day my shoulder may be a little sore at times but thats to be expected.

@colorado - You might be the toughest Hunter on this forum or the most stubborn ? Your rifle should be charged with Felony Assault ! You said you fired 18 rounds - so after round 17 you thought “I need just One More”? If you didn’t have a Flinch before this - you must have one Now …plus PTSD. Maybe now you can drop down to a .470 NE and it will feel like a .22lr.
I’m not as tough as You and faired no better when I was practicing with my .470NE, although I got no bruises. I started out shooting my double .470 very well and with open sights shooting off hand at 50 yrds - could put 2 shots into 6” to 8” circle very consistently and 3” shooting off stix with scope. But, the more I practiced - the worse I got and I believe shooting 16-20 rounds each session - for 6 to 8 Sessions before I left for Safari….caused me to develop a Flinch. I never got any bruising (I shoot 100s of rounds at skeet each month) and most days also wore a PAST recoil pad —-but the Flinch became evident on Safari when I couldn’t make easy killing shots on close Buffalo. If I had it to do over again - I would’ve practiced only 3 to 4 times and no more then 6 to 8 rounds each session. The rest would be firing rifle with Snap Caps and reloading quickly.

I calculated the recoil using 100gr which said 113.67 ft-lb of recoil….not sure if the powder charge is accurate for that projectile weight.

It’s actually the Masochistic Enabler syndrome in this thread. Quit thinking about THAT cartridge and get yourself a 10.5lb scoped .458 Lott and save your shoulder and retinas. LOL

I have the sako in 500j and find just the opposite. I think the recoil is much less than 500 nitro and 505 Gibbs.

Interesting, is that the Brown Bear model with the laminate stock? Did you scope it? Add weight by any other means.

No. It will be a red dot. I love the way it handles.
