Guns through Amsterdam?

I know that a gun permit is needed to fly through Amsterdam. My question is regarding if I need to affix the permit to the gun case or if I carry it? A friend who has made the same trip said the gun permit has to be securely taped to the outside of the gun case. Any insight from those who have flown through Amsterdam with rifles would be appreciated. I submitted paperwork on time through a travel agent, but I have not received any paperwork regarding Amsterdam. I know I should just wait for an answer from the travel agent, but I think the real experts on all this stuff are often right here on the forum. Thanks, Randy.

As with any important paperwork, always have a copy on you.

No matter where I am going I have copies of the permits inside the gun case.

We noticed that the police appeared to wait until the last minute. i.e.. within a couple of weeks of the flight.
Repeated phone calls at that point.
I'd be asking the Travel Agent for an update on the progress, unless the application was just submitted yesterday .
( I have had a few screw up on some important issues for me)

I had my travel agent take care of my permit for me. Have you checked with them to see if they will assist you.

The permit stay with you. They usually wait until a week before your travel departure date to send the e mail or fax to you with your permit.

You will have to show It to the agent to check your rifle. They will ask If it is the original or a copy. As they want the original. I received my original on line and printed it. I had to get a supervisor to check the paperwork and provide an OK prior to checking my rifle case.

Went thru amsterdam in 2012 and heading back thru again this May, as James said, its normally sent a week or so before you take off, carry the paper work with you and you will have no problesm. We flew with KLM and you need to call them i think 72 hrs before your departure time just to confirm that you are bringing your rifle and that you have your paperwork. On our last trip no issues and no questions going thru amsterdam...

Just remember, you need 1 permit for going and another for returning home!
1 each way NOT 1 only.

Thanks for the input. We're going to South Africa from Atlanta to Johannesburg, the return is the only leg that goes through Amsterdam. Really looking forward to being in South Africa, not so much to the hours it takes to travel there.

Not the case anymore. The new permit has a section labeled Vice Versa I believe indicating you are transitting back through Amsterdam. You only need to fill out one application now. Verified this directly with them on the phone.
