I've got the typical reading resources on reloading big bores like Pierre van Der Walt, A-Square, etc. I'm looking for more reading material about the 500J. Were there any particular works from Sanchez-Arino, J Hunter, etc that I should be looking for? I'm looking for any stories, hunting experiences, etc on this caliber. Thanks.

The .500 rimless Jeffery is discussed briefly by John Pondoro Taylor in his book on African Rifles and Cartridges. You may find more material by following up on the old Rhodesian hunter well known for using it- one C. Fletcher Jamieson.

Interesting subject. Good luck!

Yes, I have Taylor's book. It's a classic of course but with a small section on the 500j.

If you can get your hands on it, try finding a copy of Harald Wolf’s “Hatari Times“ series of magazines. One of the issues discusses the .500 Jeffery in detail. Harald was an old Belgium based gunsmith who built Mr. Tony Sanchez Arino’s .500 Jeffery (and is the person single handedly responsible for bringing this caliber back from the dead after it went extinct in 1939).

Interestingly enough, Mr. Arino’s rifle is not a true .500 Jeffery. It’s a wildcat that’s based on the .500 Jeffery minus the rebated rim.

I wonder if Harald is still alive. I met him in Australia during a water buffalo hunt in 1996. At that time, he was using a .404 Jeffery built on a Magnum Mauser action by himself. Last time we spoke was in 2004. Great standup guy with lots of knowledge.

I've heard a lot of good things about Harald's work. Does anyone know which issues to look for of the Hatari Times?

My 500j is getting a little weight added to it. 10.4 lbs is a little light but it sure carries nicely. Looking for 11-11.5 lbs empty. That will drop recoil from 90 ft lbs down into the 70's.

Great Cartridge! I took a custom one on a Win 70 Classic Stainless Action and 16" SS Barrel (Laminated stock,Cerakoted, quarter Rib banded front etc) to Africa in 08 and got 2 Buff with 1 shot kills (Barnes X ) and then the next month to Alaska for a nice 9ft Brownie...Love the rifle and caliber!
(Also if you Google 500 Jeffery I'm sure you will get alot of info too!)

Since some of us members of the Forum are aficionados of this cartridge or similar, meaning the cartridge 12,7x70 Schüler for example, a lot has already been discussed in the context of the 500 Jeffery club.

Yes, that's a great topic on this forum. I was looking for a published titles. Thanks Zephyr.

Look for Tony Sanchez-Ariño's "Great African Calibers" Safari Press
Just got this title in today from a Canadian book store. Pretty good section on the 500j and the 500ne, which are 2 of my favorite DG calibers. Looks to be a good book overall on the use of large calibers in Africa.

Great question .. I have No experience in Africa & perhaps not much to lend. However, NA Black Bear, etc. I will always be astonished with this cartridge.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
