ZIMBABWE: One Of The Greatest Buffalo Hunts: Video Report Of My Hunt In The Omay With Johnny Russell Of Dalton & York Safaris

That bull is the perfect reward for a proper hunt. As I watched I felt I was right behind you. Loved every minute of it and seeing the whole team completely focusssed.
Congrats on a great buff.

I think you have a contender for the Rigby award with that hunt. And that bull. If it doesn’t win. It will definitely be one of stories in the book.
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say. I wasn't sure if @RIGBY is going to do another round of the award? If they open it back up, I would enjoy writing this hunt up and sending it in. It's such a great award and definitely an idea I want to support.

Great Safari, what a fabulous hunt.

There is only one thing left to say, HAIL TO THE VICTORS - GO BLUE!

The two times I’ve hunted the Omay, we tried to do a dry land hippo, but never could close the deal. We only saw bulls out in the water.
It is a very fun hunt; you're stalking on the flood plain so you have to use terrain and cover (bushes) to get close.

In this case they wanted me to try to anchor him immediately so we wouldn't wind up with a water recovery.

It turned out ok and I really enjoyed this whole portion of the safari.

Congrats on such a wonderful safari. Great animals all around. That bushbuck looked spectacular as well. Conservation through hunting and helping the community as well. Thanks for sharing.

I think seasonality is important. They explained to me that in the wintertime the water gets cooler, and the hippos are more likely to come out on land and bask in the sun to recharge and warm up. We had cool nights and we were seeing some activity out of water.

In fact I got to see something that really impressed me: at one point a bull and cow hippo emerged from a shallow pan and climbed up a VERY steep hill almost effortlessly. They essentially just "put it in second gear" and motored right up the hill, no trail needed. Very impressive to watch!

Great hunt and video. That shot on. The hippo couldn’t have been better and what a buffalo. Huge rounded boss and worn broken horns. Damn, that’s a bull!
It was interesting to see the fervency with which the villagers chopped up the hippo.

Very well done video. And a PROPER Buffalo. that bushbuck was also very nice.

Nice safari my friend!

I watched it yesterday but didn't see this thread til this afternoon..

Magnificent old bull. As soon as I saw it, I thought, "That's a Rigby Dagga Boy winner"

As others have said above, I hope you get to enter it. A tremendous bull, but the story makes him a real trophy.

Congratulations on a magnificent safari.

You sure made a nice shot on that hippo. Can you describe your bullet choices for each of the animals taken.
Thank you!

I was shooting North Fork bullets in 375 H&H.

I used the 350gr SS bullet for the first shot on the buffalo, and the 350gr CPS for the backing shots on the buffalo and for the hippo shot.

MV was about 2260fps for both.

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts

Hi PaulB,
I have a Ballard Arms Model 1885 chambered for .333 Jeffery Flanged. Do you have any idea where I can get ammo for this?

I am new to this forum so I am sorry if I am doing something wrong!
Thank You!
